I was at the Junkyard today (I'm there ALOT). I was wandering in the Chevy section and found this Engine. Who can tell me what it is? I did ALOT of research and I think i've figured it out. This would be VERY cool to put in a Camaro. I'm tempted to buy it. Do notice that the Spark Plugs are Inboard. you aren't likely to have a problem with your spark plug wires on this one. Aw man, I Really, Really wanna let the cat out of the bag, but i'll wait until someone gets it. The Closeup is the Casting Number on one of the Heads, but i don't think that will help a whole lot.

Looks like a Chevy 349 /409 big block but the rockers are wrong

No, it's not. The Valve Covers do look similar, but this is a V6 not a V8. Besides, the Spark Plugs are on the Wrong Side for that.

Yup; a GMC V6.

Those were available from some time in the 50s, all up through the 60s. There were a bunch of them; most common one was a 305 (ironic, eh??) which therefore is probably what that one is. They came in a whole bunch of sizes all the way up to about a 427 though.

Easy to spot from a LONG WAY AWAY by having the spark plugs on the intake side of the head instead of the exhaust.

They were damn near indestructible; but ran just about like a tractor motor. Nice torque (since they had lots of CID), no RPM capability AT ALL. The head chamber shape was very poor for flow: just THINK for a minute what the chamber would have to look like, for the plug to be where it is. But, a GREAT truck engine.

Not sure this is about "smart"; more a question of just raw BTDT.

The rockers BTW are very similar, if not the same as, the old Chevy in-line 194 & 235 "sufferin 6s". The rocker has a screw with a rounded tip and the push rod has a cupped seat.

Very Nice. You guys ARE smart. I have to say that it was the first time I've come across a 305 V6. I knew it was something odd. that's why i took a picture of it. If i had some extra cash, i would probably grab it and try to Rebuild it.

my wife's grandfather has one in an old truck at his place. he said it would pull anything, but never got better than about 8 mpg.

Recognized it right away. We had a '65 3/4 ton pick-up and a '60 2-1/2 ton truck with the 305 version. "Dog" and "fuel hog" are apt monikers.

The school also had a bus with one of the larger versions, but I forget which one (351, I think, may have been a 401). The Chevy 350 buses would pull away from it with ease, and pass more gas stations.

We had the heads crack on the pick-up, and I was given the task of pulling them and putting on the replacements. I was 14 at the time, I believe. Ran better after that, but still sucked fuel like nobody's business. The sparkplug placement was about as bad as you could do, which led to the power and efficiency issues.

Was the lack of revving capability a port design problem or mechanical? The valve train looks pretty damn bullet proof to me just from the pictures.

Im 25 and ran across the twin six 702 but didnt have a clue what it was especially with 2 distributors hanging off the back. Months later the junk yard owner told me what it was.
