Re: 91 92 tail's to 85 ta
They are not all the same. Some only use 3 bulbs, 1 1156, 2 1157s. Some use 4 bulbs, PLUS 3 smaller bulbs (145s i think).
To do my STS tail lights, I had to swap out the 2 outer most sockets to 1157 sockets. Not a big deal. Autozone/Pep Boys etc., carries brand new sockets.

Re: 91 92 tail's to 85 ta
I don't know the wire specifics, but I know this...
The early wiring has no plug between the dash & the tail lights themselves,
Whereas, the 89 GTA I stripped, had a plug under under the rear seat, making it MUCH easier to unplug the harness. Dunno id the wires are the same at that point, and you could simply splice black to black, red to red, etc.
I know the early non-GTA lights & later lights have more sockets, but I dunno where the wires split off.

Gentleman, here are two pics embellishing the newer harness. The connection to the main harness is behind the rear glove compartment. There are seven wires, color coded as follows; light blue, yellow, light green, red w/white stripe, dark green, black, brown....

I dunno then...Neither my 87 GTA nor the 89 GTA I parted out, and still have the harness from that I was referring to above, have the connector in your pics.

^ It's been awhile since I seen an earlier harness. He'll either need the pigtail running from the fusebox along with the piece that I posted, or he'll have to match up the '85-'92 wire for wire and solder them accordingly. Steve, how many wires run toward the back with the earlier harness....?

Re: 91 92 tail's to 85 ta
I have a 92 and I want to put the 82-84 tail lights on my car. Has anyone here done this? Will I be able to wire the old 82-84 wire harness into my 92 harness?

Re: 91 92 tail's to 85 ta
Converting tail lights isn't as easy as you would think. I thought it was when I converted my old 89 formula to an 86 TA light. Trans Am lighting is different than any of the other models even in the same year. Here is the problem I ran into with switching to the TA tails.
The difference is in the brake switch. When you step on the brakes a switch allows voltage to be sent to the tail lights. The voltage is sent to two different places. On the TA the voltage from the brake switch goes to the turn signal switch. This is where it will get a little complicated. On the formula the voltage bypasses the turn signal switch and goes straight to the tail lights.
Sometimes the same bulb is used for multiple functions. So if voltage is routed incorrect then all kinds of weird things happen. Like what you ask? Well when i stepped on the brakes my horn would sound. HAHAHA!

You need a wiring diagram for your car and for the car that the tail lights are from. Then find a taillight harness with a male and female connector and start splicing wires where they need to go. Color coded wires are your friend!

Then, during the Super Bowl, a STS controller was installed on his lights.

Re: 91 92 tail's to 85 ta
Which wire did he change that only took five minutes. I'm interested because mine wasn't that easy. If i did it incorrectly or if their is a better way to do it than I would be interested. I hate taking the long way around when there is an easy fix. Let us know the exact details how he did it. Thanks.

Wow, I have been polishing my 91-92 Trans am taillights and was going to start researching this topic. I thought it was going to be a fairly simple installation. I know people have done this, why are things getting so much more complicated then they should be??

Re: 91 92 tail's to 85 ta
Yeah. I have an extra set of GTA tail lights, and I've had good friends begging for them. But if I ever need a set, I can only imagine what I'd pay, besides with every day that goes by, they'll get harder to find, and the asking price will go higher.

I am assuming that you are talking about the 3 part 85-90 taillights...
I am talking about the 2 part 1991-1992 TA/GTA taillights. Those go for big money and are the ones I am trying to wire into my 88 Formula.
