How to make a true cai
I need help on a simple but effective way on how to stop sucking in the motor temperatures. I tagged a pic I'm open to any ideas but I don't wanna cut into the car. Thanks

Re: How to make a true cai
The tpi intake draws air from outside the engine bay in front of the a/c condenser. (goes in place of the plastic cover around hood latch) I guess you could argue it will be warmer air because of its proximity to radiator, but I'm not buying it.

Re: How to make a true cai
get a TPI intake setup... it hooks up to an LT1 like it's meant to be there, and draws cool air thru a pair of filters in front of the radiator...
a setup off a V6 will also work- i'm pretty sure it's the same parts as the V8 TPI cars.

every intake is restrictive after a certain point... a mostly stock LT1 is not at that point.

Re: How to make a true cai
This is a setup I made for my 2.8L several years ago. It is better than a heat shield as it draws cold air from outside the engine bay. You can't see it in the pic, but I used a 4" hole saw to cut a hole were the evap canister used to be and then routed the tube through it with the cone filter on the other end.

Re: How to make a true cai
Step 1. Take your filter off. Step 2. Cut a hole in the battery tray. Step 3. Add more plumbing so that is goes through the hole. Step 4. Attach filter.
You couldn't use the TPI setup anyway, you don't have the plastic for the filters. Not that you would want to use that garbage setup.

Try siliconeintakes.com
If you run the filter under the battery tray keep in mind you can run the risk of sucking up water.

If you don't want to slice a hole in the car you could always get a ram air hood and make some duct work that will seal to the hood. The air would be plenty cold & clean

Re: How to make a true cai
So I think I want to try "ram air." But with a little twist. There is a hole beside the radiator that I can use PVC or a dryer duct of some kind and attach it to a fog light hole. Then try to seal it off the best I can so it only gets that air.

That has been done with some good results.

Ah I see. It's not a stupid idea at all. But your either going to have to modify an existing cold air kit from another type of car, or make it all from scratch.

Re: How to make a true cai
I got 6" flexible dryer duct attached it to my fog light hole. Grabbed some pliers and made a bigger hole by the radiator. Then I was able to squeeze the duct through. I used a 3 gallon tub with a lid. Cut a hold in the top of lid, and a hole in the side. Added more dryer duct threw the hole of the tub which goes inside the duct from the fog light. I'm going to use weatherstripping for the lid for a good seal. And get a better seal for the duct, then spray paint the lid black for a better look.
But I put my ear by the intake and don't hearing and sucking noises but I can hear a sucking sound from fog light, so I guess it has a good enough seal.
It pulls harder and smoother all the way up to 6000rpm.

Re: How to make a true cai
You can get spectre cai parts at Oreillys and advance and probably some other parts stores. Or you can order spectre from jegs or summit. I've wondered if with the spectre stuff if you could make a ram air setup through the high beams with their headlight RA brakets.

Re: How to make a true cai
Could you elaborate on this? What is spectre's shortcoming/fla? I can imagine their filters but what is low quality about their piping? I don't know anything about them but I've been impressed by their intake kits and variety of accessories to build a custom one.

Re: How to make a true cai
The material they use for their parts is just REALLY cheap and doesn't hold up well. I don't even know how many times I had to warranty some of their parts because they broke. The $200 kit is probably okay, but I would advise staying away from their DIY plumbing pieces. The filters seem to hold up well, surprisingly.

Re: How to make a true cai
You know I've been toying with the idea of building a functional CAI out of those "adjustable" 4 inch aluminum dryer vents ( the ones that are able to be twisted and straightened) and a 4 inch straight tube. It should only cost about $20 bucks to build. Thanks for the inspiration
edit. This is what I'm talking about

straight tubing

then probably cut a hole and have this bolted on to draw the air up to the filter box
