Just like the one you see here

Was that 1990 only? Is that just a decal kit or is it painted on.

here is a red version

Car: Old man car till I get another 3rd Gen
Engine: at least it's a V8
Transmission: Wrong wheel drive. Makes no difference to me.
I'm not sure of the exact years that color was available, I think it was 87-90. As to the color layout, it is an actual two tone with a decal kit to separate. My 86 Firebird had a similar paint scheme when I bought it, and I was surprised to find out that the decal's primary purpose was to serve as a way to "clean up" the appearance of the break between the two colors since it was not done on a body line. I think that light blue was called Maui Blue?

Here are a couple of pics of my 89 Formula. It basically looks just like the one on the thirdgen logo. The decal stripe separating the blue and silver paint is red on top with black underneath which fades to clear.

<img src="http://www.valiantakitas.com/firebird/front.jpg">

<img src="http://www.valiantakitas.com/firebird/side.jpg">

I had an 87 Formula which was black and silver also and the separating stripe was orange and black.

Thanks!! I have many pictures from just about every angle. Just let me know what you want to see in a picture and I can post it.

I love the color. The car is totally original with 77K miles.

That color combo was availble from 1988 thru 1990. The "Maui Blue" was not available in 1987. An interesting fact is in 1987 color #23 was "Bright Blue Metallic", which is a dark Blue. In 1988 color #23 was the "silver blue metallic" aka Maui Blue.

You could special order a Formula or Firebird with stripe delete WX1 It was a credit of about $150.00. But the stripe was standard.

I noticed something about those two Maui Blue Formulas. If you look under the front fender in front of the wheel where the air Dam is one is painted silver and the other is black.

89 Formulaguy & 83firebirdS/E, If you could look at yours and tell me if it is smooth or has a texture??? I suspect that 83firebirdS/E would be smoothe and the 89Formulaguy's will have a texture.

Since there both made in 1989, could you look on your drivers door and tell me what month and year your cars were produced...

Please

Mine is black and has a texture to it. I never noticed that the blue Formula Pontiac used in their press kit was painted silver under the nose. I believe my '87 was painted silver. Going to have to look now....

Just looked inside the door and the build month is 01/89 which makes sense because the pricing date on the invoice is 1-27-89 and the shipping date is 2-1-89

Did they change the lower area sometime in 89? Have you found that some 89's have the lower section painted?

I am trying to figure out what is "correct" My 87 Formula was originally yellow with the dark gray stripe. Under the front of the car it was painted dark gray, like the stripe (and the panels were smoothe). When I was thinking about making a ram air setup from under the car I picked up an extra passenger side piece, and it had a texture.

I began looking to see if possibly the Formula was painted but the base was not, that did not seem to hold water. Then when I noticed that one car had it painted and the other didn't, in the same year, (in this thread) I am beginning to think that maybe it was a mid year change in 1989...

The Jury is still out, but it is an interesting research project.

Hi John,

Hopefully this picture will help. This is my 87 Formula (R.I.P.). You can clearly see that the underside of the nose is painted silver. This picture was taken when the car was two or three days old.

<img src="http://www.valiantakitas.com/firebird/s87formula.jpg">

I also have pictures of another 87 firebird and an 86. Both have the two tone paint and both have the underside painted.

Hope this helps.

Actually mine has texture and was black. I however decided to paint it all silver because I like how it looks better. My 1983 S/E is the same body color all the way down and is smooth as well and thats what got me liking it.

89formulaguy,
could you send me a larger pic of your car for my website???

thanks

okfoz @ usol dot com

Well, I decided to see if there was a part number change... here is what I found:

The deflectors on the 1987 formula had the part number 10020355 (LH) & 10020354 (RH).

Starting in 1988 thru 1990 the deflector part number is 10118488 RH and 10118489 (LH)
