Our cars are worth how much!!...?

I just happend to check out Kelly Blue Book and my car in excellent condition is only worth $2500! Like most of you, I have a lot more invested in my car than $2500! Heck, some people put that much into their car on a weekend. So if some dumb a$$ crashes into me I only get a check for $2500 and they take my car away? Do any of you guys have extra insurance? I have full coverage but if someone hits me, or I wreck it and it's a total loss (which is not hard if it's supposedly only worth $2500) I'm S.O.L. ?

Re: Are cars are worth how much!!...?

i only have liblity on my car for that reason. my insurance company said it was only worth 2k so i was like **** it. on average a v8 hard top camaro is worth between 2k-8k depending on model engine and overall condition of the car. believe it or not the value of our cars are slowing going up because of all the kids crashing them. just last week there was 3 freash IRocs at my local pick and pull.

I think the blue books are what help insurers make money, whereas NADA looks at how much these cars are selling for and determines a value from the market. Ofcourse neither are incredibly accurate. I would say have your car appraised if your worried about it, and save all your receipts....

I know how you feel I just payed $5,000 on a paint job and mine is worth the same, and yes you can only get liability in 2 more years I can have antique insurance that will only run me $300.00 for the year and they will give me full coverage with an apprasial sad ain't it.Stay safe and keep it out of harms way until then.

We've hashed this one out a couple times. Bring receipts to your insurance agent and have the car appraised. Insure the car for the appraisal value.

Re: Are cars are worth how much!!...?

I asked my insurance company to do just that they told me that the vechicle was not eligible to have appraisal because the car was not considered an antique they have to go by blue book. That was with appraisal in hand at there desk.I went to 2 different insurance companies. They also told me because of the state you are in.
Please don't take this reply as being harsh I don't mean it that way I am only stating what my insurance company told me.

If you are under 20 years old, that might explain it.

Seriously, the agents you went to are lazy sacks. Any decent agent worth a crap will let you insure a rock for a million dollars if you pay them enough monthly.

Try Hagerty's or keep looking at other insurance carriers. If your car really is worth more than book value, have the receipts of the cold hard cash you paid to make it worth money that requires they insure the car for more than Blue Book.

Re: Our cars are worth how much!!...?

Exactly. You have to keep trying.
My car's appraisal came back at just over $21,000 (CDN). That's approximately $16,500 over book value!!!
I took the appraisal to my local insurance agent (in this case Wawanesa) and requested the 19A clause. I believe this clause applys in both the US & Canada. What that states is that the insurer will guarantee me payment of full appraised value should it get written off. What it prevents (this is the catch, always is with insurers) is that if their adjusters declare it to be worth more than appraised value, I would only get the amount on the appraisel.
What are the odds of that happening!

And to prevent that from happening and to make sure the car's value is current, I get it reappraised every two years.

If your regular insurance companies are too useless to help, then do as Cadillac said, try the companies that specialise in this service.

Good luck.
