Need a new shifter boot (rubber preferred)

I need a new shifter boot since the old one can allow debris to fall down below into the gear box and the heat that's entering is ridiculous.

If possible, I want a rubber accordion type of boot and not leather or vinyl. I know the dimensions are 4" x 6" (10cm x 15cm) and noticed that some replacements come with a plate already which wouldn't work with the console and those cheapo plastic torx screws. I wanted to check here first to see if anyone else knows of the proper part number/manufacturer that will work.

The correct original part is long since discontinued. You might try a 4th gen boot, assuming you can find one. Chances are good they're discontinued too.

Sounds like you're missing the lower boot as well.

I wasn't even aware a lower shift boot existed. I've always thought the boot (on any manual transmission) is always visible and mounted on the console or floor. I will have to remove that cheap plastic plate and have a look down there.

Nope; There are two; the "lower shifter boot" which mounts to the trans tunnel and the upper/console shift boot which is more for aesthetics. The lower boot is the really important one as it is designed to keep debris, noise, gases, and heat out of the cabin where the shifter comes through.

Abubaca suggested using a rain/pipe boot from Lowes:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_53196-138-14052_4294934210_4294937087?productId=3127041&Ns=p_product_price|1&pl=1&currentURL=/pl_Flashings_4294934210_4294937087_?rpp=30$No=90$Ns=p_product_price|1

After reading his suggestion with what he did, I took a look at it at Lowe's; The boot is almost exactly the right size and looks like it should work great; I plan on using it when I do my T5 swap here in the next couple weeks. I've searched really hard for a 3rd or 4thgen one and they seem to be either nonexistent or badly used.

That idea is so good that I went down to Lowe's during my lunch and picked one up. Now, all I need to do is remove the console plate and the top boot and see what surprises I find down there prior to installing.

Thanks a bunch for the Lowe's link (you too Abubaca)

Let us know if dimensionally, its the same/similar... I will be using it on mine but since I can cut as small a hole as I need, I know it will work w/o issues. I've never heard of it being used to replace a factory cut shifter hole, so it'll be valued information to know if it fits over the stock cut hole.

Let us know!

Re: Need a new shifter boot (rubber preferred)

Alright, so over the weekend, I removed the upper boot, and had a look inside. Apparently, the lower shift boot is in pretty good shape except for a small minor rip. Impressive for something about 26 years old.

Despite this, I placed the roof flash piece over top of the console for perspective purposes. It obviously was too big to fit inside, but it looks like if one were to carefully cut the proper dimensions, the roof flash will work for a lower shift boot replacement.

Re: Need a new shifter boot (rubber preferred)

Yeah, in order to get the old boot out, you really have to take the console out to get at the side bolts. It looks like the new 'boot' will work, just need to remove the console and center it up in there. It'll be tight inside the console, but not so bad that I think it'll cause any issues at all.

When you have it all apart, you'll have to let us know if that roofing boot will fit over the stock cutout in the trans tunnel.
