Steering column wiggle- diagnosing?
I read yesterday's posts about steering wheel movement- i also read the FAQ on fixing it.........Now I just need to be sure that mine has "loose bolts" as opposed to being damaged in some other way. the part of my column that attaches to the bottom of the dash doesn't move at all. The "tilting part " of the column moves a quarter inch or more. Do I need to tighten the "bolts" or do I need another column? Thanks Pat

Sounds like the exact same thing my brother experienced with his 87 Z28. There are small bearings in the column itself. After years of getting in and out of these cars (pull on the steering wheel) weeken's the bearings...and they eventually fall out. We had to eventually replace the column...not really that big of a job....

so you think in my case it ISN"T the bolts being loose, but the column is shot? I guess I'd also like to hear some other opinions before I spend the time to pull it all apart..........thanks pat

Sounds like mine...the bottom part where the tilt joint is, doesnt move at all, but the tilting part of the wheel does...it will feel like its spring loaded...I could pull mine down and to the left about 1/4 inch.
Thats what was described in the other thread. (I think)

dont try unless u know what ur doin
i dont reccomend taking it apart and trying to fix unless you really know what your doing.
i watched my shop teacher do mine for me, and it took him a good 30-45min and he had all the special equipment (anti-theft plate to remove steering wheel, the sockets to tighten the bolts...) oh yea, and you better have the right sockets before you take the whole thing apart. i think that they were torque sockets, but im not sure, he kept them seperate in their own bag with his other personal steering stuff, so they might be like, one of a kind or something. like a key for your lug nuts kind of thing...
cause if you take it all apart, and get stuck, you cant really drive it somewhere to get finished, or let alone, go out and get the right parts to finish the job... (unless of course you have a second car you can use)

There are a few special tools that you need, Mine would wiggle like a hose sometimes and I almost lost control of my car! That's the night I decided to fix it.. I still haven't figured how to get that darn high beam rod back in there correctly.. One day when I get it back from having the roll cage installed I will probably take is all back apart and try to fix it.. I want one of those removable steering wheels.. Now that's anti-theft!

Not hard and you can 'rent' the puller and lock plate remover from AZ. There are four bolts in there and to get to all four of them you'll need to pull the tilt pins which requires a special tool or some ingenuity. Even if you don't pull the pins you can still get to the bottom two bolts and a twelve point socket will work on them. Tightening these two is usually enough. You shouldn't get 'stuck' anywhere. Just pay attention to how the high beam rod and cam go together.
I'd definitely try to tighten mine before spending the money on another. Should be about an hour for a first timer.
