smack your dads friend.

its possible you broke, or jammed the speedo. is the needle stuck at 85 or is it sitting at zero? is it a electric speedo or a mechanical one, check the sending unit on the tailhousing of the trans. it may have come off or is loose. if the sending unit is wasted its not very expensive, i see no reason why the trans needs to be replaced, unless the speedo is not moving because you blew the trans and in that case the car would not move either

Most half KPH & half 85 MPH were used in the early models. If so its probably a mechanical speedo.
