headliner self fix

I pulled the headliner out of my RS because it was sagging, had rough edges and just looked nasty. Id like to get it recovered but that seems to be out of my price range as everything I do is severly budgeted. I was hoping on just picking up some material and attempting to do this myself, so if anybody has don't this before id appreciate some tips. Basically going to try nad just glue the new stuff on, but would this work very well? If so what would you recommend for an adhesive, if not what else should I do? Thanks

Re: headliner self fix

is your car HT or T top? if its HT then its a snap.

pull the material off and get a wire brush and LIGHTLY scrub across the backer board to remove all of the leftover foam. there will be "some" left over but the board will mainly have a yellow color.

remember this, the only finished edge on a HT liner is the very front by the visors and mirror, all of the other edges can be cut flush.

be sure to fix all of the places the board is broken by gluing strips of newspaper over the breaks and to re structure the areas around the seat belt holes if they are cracked or falling apart. this is standard practice when re covering an orig headliner.

after you have re structured the board (give it a day for the glue to dry) lay the board flat and lay the material flat on it with the lines going L-R. peel one end or the other back and spray around the dome light pretty good. dont soak it but dont be sparingly ither. after you have done a bit lay the fabric dow and LIGHTLY press, just enough to get the foam to contact but not enough where your hands contact the board.

after a min or so peel one side or the other back and do the same. work in a circle going in a spiral circling the dome light hole. after about 30 mins you should have the board completly coverd. fold about 1½ in over the leading edge of the board as this is the finished edge i spoke of earlier. give it a day and re install.

ya have any ques, drop me a line.

Re: headliner self fix

It is a T top car. Is there a specific type of glue I should use?

Re: headliner self fix

go to autozone or any parts store and get the orange permatex can of glue or the 3M stuff.

T top is a bit similar but you start in the middle and wrap the center first and then when you get to the corners you gotta fold the material over in the corners. this is where you take time and work with the fit of the material first and THEN glue it down.

also make sure to check the materal that going to cover the front and back areas of the headliner as the material "moves around" and can short you at the end if you dont pay attn.

Re: headliner self fix

Its alot more time consuming than youd think if you want it done right.Strip the headliner down to just the yellow fiberboard material. Fix any broken off pieces with fiberglass then just resin the whole thing. After your done that take your time get the right headliner glue and headliner fabric(has foam backing) and apply it to the headliner. Im assuming you have ttops because it says so in your info. If the car has t tops the headliner most likely has water damage just gluing new material to it without covering the whole thing in resin is a bad idea. materials cost me 40 dollars and I have the confidence knowing that the headliner will most likely last the life of the car.

Re: headliner self fix

And just for a heads up I got the permatex and 3m headliner glue and the permatex is better imo.

Re: headliner self fix

you dont have to do the resin, thats a bit extreme and if ya have a T top leak and its leaking in on your headliner, you have other issues that are needed to be addressed before the headliner.

Re: headliner self fix

It may be a bit extreme but it will keep the fiberboard from seperating and material from degrading as well. Its one of those things where if you have it out and you plan on keeping the car you might as well do it but thats just my opinion take what you will. Good luck with your project.

Re: headliner self fix

I also used resin and fiberglass to fix mine.
Some parts of the original headliner were quite bad, so the options really were a complete fix with fiberglass or a replacement headliner.

After taking out the A console covers and rest I definately want the headliner to outlast the vehicle as redoing the headliner also means having to buy all new clips for the A console covers etc.

Re: headliner self fix

Just wanted to say that its finished and turned out more than amazing. Used black vinyl for the cover material, I couldn't be happier with the results. Thanks for the tips
