Hello all i just got a 87 iroc z28 and the pull down isnt working. The motor is good and i hear the relay clicking when i plug it in and take it out. however nothing when i close the trunk it wont go down. Not too sure what to do exactly is there anyway to just override the whole power pull down? any ideas what it could be? the left side closes better then the right too. car sat for 8 years before i got it two days ago.

does it try to close? mine needs some help to pull the hatch down. If not, you may need the switch that trips to make it pull down the hatch.

If the motor runs like it is trying to pull it down when you close the trunk, there is a plastic gear that is probably stripped.

If it doesn't run when you close the trunk, it is probably the small switch that mounts on the latch that is bad.

it doesnt run at all when i hit the switch to release or when i close it. but when i connect wires to just the motor it turns and when i re connect everything i hear clicking in the relay

Hi, I'm the guy who bought the IROC (Small world). I took a look at the assembly last night and the motor was hot as hell. I couldn't even touch it. Rather then mess with the existing setup I ordered a new motor and plastic housing. I'm hoping that will do the trick.

Mine just started this too. I opened the hatch fine then when I try to close it I get nothing at all. Is there a way to get it to act like a manual hatch until I can get replacement parts? I have to park mine outside and cant keep the hatch open.

Sorry about getting off the subject but I would like to know if anyone knew where i could get the plastic gear that goes in the motor? mine is missing some teeth on it. It just runs when i try to close the hatch. And how does the motor know when to stop when it is all the way down? I think its not stopping when it gets down. Is there a switch? thanks for your help.

The motor and housing came in for mine but I haven't had a chance to mess w with it yet. In the meantime I unbolted it and pushed the whole motor and assembly down on the track so that it closes tight. It stays shut as long as u don't pull up on it.

Finally got the time (and patience) to dig into the trunk pull down tonight. Replaced the gear, motor, housing and reversing switch. I figured while it was apart I'd replace everything. Much to my surprise...it works!!! Thank god that's over with!!!

I ended up switching mine out to a standard trunk latch.. It was too much of a pain messing with the pull down latch all the time...

I just bougaht a 86 firebird and started to do work on it my trunk motor was working fine no sighns of failure before but wen I wen to close hatch I heard the motor for a quick sec then it stopped just hoping to get suggestions and advice. Ps how do I start new thread lol

The reason these hatch motors keep failing is the parts are made of plastic. It usually coincides with struts being worn. This makes the hatch slam down and strips the gears. Solution? Don't slam the hatch, keep your struts replaced if they fail, and DONT let some bagboy put groceries in your car and shut the hatch. It just takes a gentle closing to latch then the pulldown does the rest.

Also if you have your car washed at a full-service car wash watch out for the dude that cleans off the excess water drops. He may go the extra mile for you since you have such a cool car and open the hatch to clean it, then slam the hatch shut to close it (cuz that is what he does on his 84 Camaro).

I agree the hatch housing is plastic and can break from abuse. I strengthen them on both the old style and new style motors with epoxy and aluminum. Also if the hatch is adjusted too low, then the hatch housing is in tension and can snap if you hit a pothole or railroad crossing at speed.

Uhhh...yeah, the bagboy thing, it was just a scenario that suggested to not let someone else shut your hatch. I must be getting old. Most places on the planet don't even do that anymore. Here in our small town there IS a store that still offers to. (maybe I'm getting really old)
