SheldonZ's Swap #2!! Doin things a little different...56K Warning
Hey Everyone.
Figure ill finally make a post about this, now that ive settled deals!
Many of you have seen my '89 iroc-z floating around here, i had a LB9 in it, then i swapped it out for a LM7 5.3L.
Well, i want to go in a new direction with the car, and im going to do things different, so i decided to start with a clean slate.
Im heading down next weekend to grab my new 1991 Z28!!!
Here's the plans:
LS1 Swap engine/trans
LS1 brakes on all 4's
Everything functional as normal
Car looking brand spankin new
Here's my plans, and things ill be doing different:
-New F-body harness, using cable throttle, wiring to be completely plug & play, wiring set neatly into body, computer in interior, fuse panel neatly hidden.
-LS1 Rad/cooling, using LS1 fans, smaller LS1 rad, this way i can use LS1 rad hoses with no issues, and the steam hose can be a clean hook up
-Functional heating, i never had this in the last car, this one ill make the heater completely functional
-New fuel system, ill be retaining the LS1 fuel tank, but ill do the fuel level mod so that my stock gauge works, and ill be running new lines. the plan is to have a 3/8" hard line that i will run to about the underside of the brake booster, then ill have a -AN line running to the fuel rails. Ill have an adaptor between the hardline and -An line so i can run a electronic fuel pressure gauge so i can keep tabs on it
-New Y-pipe, im not sure whether im going auto or 6spd, im hoping 6spd, but it will come down to funding, and my willingness to cut wires haha. Likely a 6spd, which will result in a new crossmember that i can run a tight tucked & pipe for better clearance. Very similar to justins
-CAI will be done differently. I want it to look prettier, ill be running it to the passenger side in attempts to make it draw in cool air from behind the headlights.
-Powersteering lines will be run differently. I want to get into some autocross, and things that will rely on good handling. At this point my power steering system isnt very efficent, so ill be running a power steering fluid cooler to keep away problems.
-1LE prop valve with my LS1 disc brakes, stock lines being retained for a clean & easy installation
Im going to be using my rebuilt LS1 w/ the TR230 camshaft, and possibly some TSP LS6 CNC Heads
For trans, it will either be a 4L65e, or a T56. Here's to hoping its a T56! will depend on my fund count. Im working a deal out with my dad.
Extra plans that have no relation to LSx swaps:
-Cleaning the underbody completely, i mean completely. I will tear the car to a shell & throw it on a rotisserie that im fabricating so i can grind it clean & coat it with POR15 so i need to never worry again. The interior floors will also get teh same coat. Engine bay will be done in a semi-gloss black.
-Exterior will get brand new paint, ill be doing a colour change, so ill have it in peice to paint it, ill be doing it in arctic white. Ill have this thing painted perfectly. Doors off, fenders, hood, nose etc all will be off.
-HID Projector headlights. This one is a bit of a long shot that im not sure if ill get to do. I really want to, but its expensive as **** and not entirely nessesary. May just get some H4 conversion housings
-Interior mods will be retained to a triple pod with A/F ratio, Fuel pressure & trans temp if auto, oil temp if 6spd. The steering wheel will be changed out for a 4th gen one cause i love the feel. Seats will be black leather '99 seats, but the rest of it will remain stock other then the stereo headunit & speakers/amp.
-Exterior wise, im planning on using the stock wheels, doing the accenting in white so it looks factory. I want the car to look as if it is a brand new car. With little updates that would be on it if it were a new car today (Engine/trans/brakes/lighting etc)
So my plans are pretty much laid out. Im hoping to have the car complete for march, though it will be a longshot.
Here are shots of the car before i start everything:
There will be a sh!tload of pictures through this thread as i go through doing this thing. Im so excited for a 2nd shot at doing it.
As for my '89, its getting a turbo LT1 from a guy local to me. Lucky car

Shel.... Sorry I didnt get a chance to respond to that last PM with the pictures in it... I meant to tell you that that 91 looks pretty good!! Look quite clean and straight. I like the color. Reminds me of Kubus's car.
You new list looks pretty good. Now is your chance to build this one exactly how you picture it. Just take it one little piece at a time, and before you know it, it'll come together.
The only thing I can comment on from your list (everything else seems good to me!) is your brake set up. This is just my humble opinion... But ide ditch the 1LE prop valve and just get an adjustable valve. Especially if you want to autocross it... It'll let you adjust those rear LS1 brakes and shift your brake bias around. Those real LS1 calipers work VERY well when not restricted by a prop valve. They are probably as strong as my stock WS6 front calipers were. haha. Brake lines are easy to make, and you can route them and bend them however you want, and you'll know everything is good to go.
Are you going to run the 4th gen booster/master cylinder? If so, you can order an ABS delete kit from SJM and you'll get stainless lines that will fit with a little tweaking, and it'll have your adjustable prop valve...and a line lock if you so chose Nice way to get what you need tho, and Ive never had a car brake as well as mine does with no dedicated prop valve. Fronts full power, rears controlled with valve.
Otherwise good luck! This should be fun! You got pretty lucky finding that 91 in such good shape with no motor and trans. Now you dont have to pull that or figure out what to do with the extra powertrain. No coolant to drain...hehe. That would make it all worthwhile for me. I hate that stuff.

Yeah, guy local to me picked it up off me. He's got a '87 donor to put the interior in it, and a turbo LT1 just waiting for it.
It will go faster with him, then it ever would have with me
----------
Thanks justin!!
Yeah, i figured i was lucky finding it, thats what helped the decision haha.
I have put thought into doing the ajustable prop + LS1 master since i still will have it all here, i could do stainless lines also that way i dont need to worry about them.

i wish you'd have used the 2210's so they'd be a 1 3/4" primary tube...i'd buy them tonight if that was the case, but i'm not building a street motor, and i'm gonna need more header than the converted hedmans

i'd like to find a line on a set that were dented or tweeked, not beyond use, but to where it wasn't quite show quality any more or something....but i can't seem to find any that are priced appropriately.
some guy in the classifieds here had a set for sale with two primaries hammered in where it looked like the car hit a big speed bump really hard...for $400

Both doors are bondo'd, passenger door hits dash when closed, drivers door is kinked underneath from an impact. Both fenders are toast. Both kinked and bent outward. Front skirt has been ripped on 1 corner, there is a rust hole by in the drivers footwell, steering column is ziptied and silicone'd together. Paint is in horrid condition. GFX dont fit properly to body etc.
When i mentioned that there was bondo in the door, the seller told me their wasnt. Their are 2 massive cracks from the bondo in the door. Either the seller got screwed over when he bought it, or he is trying to do so to the new buyer.
Needless to say i drove 1200miles round trip to get this car, which turned out to be a pile of ****. Seller was well aware of the drive i would be making, and even told me its worth it to "part the car out". Well ****, i wouldnt have driven 1200miles to get a damn parts car.
End Rant.

So i got fubar'd on this deal. Im pissed, upset, out $500, and my iroc is now pending a sale that i need to determine if i need to get out of.
I can either keep my iroc-z and do everything i had planned on doing to this car, in my iroc (Re-do the LS Swap) or i might end up doing an LSx swap in a 240sx. Someone help meeeeee

Darn man.... Im angry for you!!! If he was really being deceptive, thats BS. You should hit him up for your travel expenses from false advertising. Make him cover half your gas or something. If you went sight un-seen...then its on your. But he sent you pictures, that are obviously taken to show the cars good sides. Even I thought it was a nice car from the pics, and Im pretty picky when it comes to that.
Dont let it set ya back man... If you gotta back out of the deal of selling your current car, then go ahead. Just explain your situation and hopefully the buyer will be reasonable about it. My vote is to re-work the current car. You've done it once...second time around is a breeze and you'll be able to make it even better.

Dang man, that SUCKS. I hope that it wasn't a TGO member, but either way it's messed up...
I'd think that you'd probably be OK if you had to "back out" of the sale of your current car - just tell the guy everything that happened to you, the same way that you've described it here. Most people are pretty reasonable - and who knows, it might help if you offered to watch for another car for him... (And if you re-do your current car, you'll have the advantage of knowing what you've got, right from the outset.)
Again, sorry to hear of that jack@ss lying like that. Good luck man.

Thanks guys!
Justin: Yeah, he's been creative with the camera to pick the perfect spots to get pictures of. I was going down there beleiving it was in better shape then my car! Yeah, i managed to get out of my sale, so everything i had planned for this car, i now have planned for mine. The interior is up in the air. Ive got the parts still to do the LS1 dash if i want to, but ill spend the next month or so watching for a good 90-92 Camaro donor that i could get the dash out of. Thatway i can have less potential gremlins.
Rumble: Yeah, thank god i got my way out from it. Really wish this thing was a good friggen car, and i could have sent mine to the guy. He's a great guy, and would have worked a wonder on it. One of the very few guys i would let my car go to.
Oh well i guess, live and learn (That being said, ive had way to many expensive lessons lately! )
Ill be starting more work on my car tommorow, Im going to continue my journey to makeing an absolutaly perfect chassis (Coated, cleaned of rust etc) and a stellar performing LS1/T56

Ill be starting more work on my car tommorow, Im going to continue my journey to makeing an absolutaly perfect chassis (Coated, cleaned of rust etc) and a stellar performing LS1/T56

Sorry to hear Sheldon. These things happen from time to time its important to out these turds like you did to save other members the hassle. Integrity is everything and very easy to hide online so the old saying runs even truer "caveat emptor"
Your 89 is cherry anyways so its not like your stuck with a turd.
I just re-examined the pics again and if you look close you can actually see the crack in the door

Dont worry about it Shel... If those people cant rationalize or have any compassion in the situation, then maybe they arent the kind of people you wanna be around anyway.
Just do what you gotta do man... Hold on to your current car, and just re-do things the way you want...even if it takes alittle more time.

Thanks justin, good to have some support!
Think im gonna shift down and get movin on this car! Might as well just update all my progress in here
Got my interior all out today, and now i need to work out my dash stuff.
4th gen dash is no biggy to fit in, but to make it look and function properly is the challenge. Big things will be a-pillars and door panels. I had door panels fitted, but they didnt look good enough for me. They were fine when the door panel was closed but as soon as i opened it it exposed ugly *** sheetmetal screw heads that were holding it to the door structure.
Ive gotta start moving forward on my 6spd pedal mounting tonight/tommorow & getting my shifthole cut. Then im going to fabricate a crossmember for it.
Next on the list is my harness mods. Up in the air now whether ill go with an f-body harness or not, may stick to my truck harness, completely re-route it & then add in the M6 plugs.
