LT1 Overheating FAST when driving but cool if just idling

(96 impala SS LT1 [EGR-AC-TB Coolant Delete], NEW 3rd gen Z28 5.7 Radiator)

Heres my questions for anyone who doesn't want to read the full thing. VOTE !
A. LT1 Waterpump 92 Z28 3rd gen Radiator.... WHERE SHOULD THE HOSES BE GOING.

B. IF THE HOSES ARE HOOKED UP CORRECT... COULD AN AIR POCKET BE CAUSING ALL MY MISERY.

please read on if you can...

Here is my issue...

I thought I was going to drive my baby home today from the shop finally.
88 camaro.. 96 lt1

Its a stock 3rd Gen 5.7 Z28 replacement radiator and my lt1.

I bought the recommended pump-to-rad hoses a long time ago.. Something like a Z28 upper and a mustang lower or vice verso.. something like that... Whatever guide I followed I Bought The suggested hoses. They fit just fine.. although not perfect.. we have em zip tied up a bit cause they are just a big too long.. maybe that's cause we got em backwards?

A few days ago my cooling issue was this....
Idle or driving around (albeit VERY short because of the over heating)
The Rad is COOL to the touch... No hot engine coolant flowing through.

So my mechanic and I thought it was a bad thermostat.... So I put a new stant 180 lt1 thermostat and a new duralast Temp sensor for right there...
And took and smoke break and let it idle for like a half hour... the temp gauge finally got to about 180... the radiator was getting warm/hot to the touch... and a few mins later. (i have 92 z28 dual fan setup) both fans kicked on.. the temp gauge went down a bit, and it held that happy medium... I thought I was home free...

I go to drive home.. within a half mile or less, totally babying the car; I look at the temp gauge and its almost maxed.... I looped around and went right back to the shop barely touching the pedal, and the gauge was past its highest point My Overflow tank was FULL and pissing from under the cap it was so hot...
THE RADIATOR I COULD LAY MY HAND ON IT WAS LUKE WARM AT BEST ALMOST COLD .... Why Did it not flow like it was when it was idling?
My mechanic is boggled...

I think he may have hooked the hoses up backwards?
The throttle body has none of that coolant stuff. I bought a bypass kit, and a Billet IAC housing with no hoses or any of that TB coolant garbage.
Theres no heater hooked up at the moment.... There are no leaks except when this overheat happens and my overflow tank OVERFLOWS!@

if the hoses are hooked up the right way from the pump.. what could it possibly be?

I looked at a few posts that were somewhat helpful but I cant find a real great pic of LT1 waterpump and hoses going to a 3rd gen radiator.

If its a simple explanation llet me have it!

thanks guys... Im almost home free.... I just CANT drive this dying Honda anymore, its so depressing to have that LT1 machine and I cant drive it

no its not... but I was just going down 30 mph roads.. and it took like 2 minutes for it to happen... I will reattach the dam... but my rad wasnt even hot, like the coolant wasnt flowing thru it

Try with the dam. It will overheat without it, nothing severe but it will. On my test drives my temps got around 239 without it.

The hoses are simple, Passenger to passenger and driver to driver. Nothing to get mixed up.

I will try the dam... but the radiator was cool..... i could put my hand on it... and my temp gauge was beyond maxed out... the dang needle wanted to spin around again..

Lukily I have a nice oil cooler hooked up, and it was real hot... probably saved my ****

Re: LT1 Overheating FAST when driving but cool if just idling

the order of hoses from the waterpump is:
heater out
heater return
upper rad hose
lower rad hose
cap off oil cooler fitting

I remember my 305 did the same thing, thermostat worked for like 5 min before overheating. But i had flow to my radiator. try getting some radiator flush from autozone and spend a half hour or so flushing it with the hose(make sure your motor is cool first, dont want to crack any parts)

Im not sure if the air dam is the issue here, it seems to be heating up too fast for that, sounds like crossed hoses or a really clogged cooling system

Re: LT1 Overheating FAST when driving but cool if just idling

Are any of the hoses hot? If not has anyone ever had the water pump off? Maybe they forgot to put the water pump drive shaft back on when they put it back on.

Re: LT1 Overheating FAST when driving but cool if just idling

5$ Stant Radiator cap fixed the issue.... For some reason my radiator cap was shot.. or someone switched it...

We put the bleeder on and let it idle in the bay for a few hours... burped bubbles for a bit.. then stayed right at 190...

Drove her home and all around today... runs and drives AWESOME..

Saturday Front Drilled.slotted Rotors and ceramic pads go in.. and my Le1 Ac delete heater box.. Ill start cleaning up some of the extra wiring too, and hook my MIL up instead of a blinker bulb under the hood (works 100% tho)

NO codes... and I havent found any kind of limit yet.... gonna have to take it to a track or do somthing naughty

I will put pics on flikr and post soon. thanks!!
