You need tools and a refrigerator and some girl pictures, then it's complete. Nice garage.

Stereo & a TV would be nice too!

Great garage - looks like you have plenty of room. Nice IROC as well!

Awesome. I wish I had the funds to build a detached garage, but I'm probably going with a 4 post lift to keep mine in the house garage. I'm still jealous.

Silverstang84..The 4 Post lift is a great idea. Just remember that if you have a 8ft. ceiling and a overhead door, you might run into some issues. I checked into that too and became sad all of a sudden

Re: Spent $20,000 on IROC and it's not faster!

Any thoughts about layout, tools and others would be greatly appreciated. What you wished you did, or what works.

i have a peaked ceiling (10') and I was thinking about the portable lifts, MaxxJack or something like that (Costco sells them).

I have TV cable wired, but TV is down the road. 22 inch for now. I need it ready today for Canada/USA Junior Hockey game.

It has a ceiling mount furnace to keep my beer from freezing, so a refridgerator isn't needed for a few months.

I have owned an IROC for 24 years and this is the Beast's first den.

Happy New Year guys, cheers.

P.S. Go Canada

Owned an iroc for 25 years? That's just plain cool. It looks great for not ever being garaged.

That's cool. Check out the links above I sent. Get some grid paper and start laying it out. Wire it for 110/220 if not already, don't short yourself on outlets, insulate, nice flooring down the road. It's unlimited on what you can do!
What size is it?

Happy New Year to you also!
And Go USA!!

Re: Spent $20,000 on IROC and it's not faster!

Whole Cow, one stop shopping. It's 20 x 30, one car only and only car related iems in the garage. It's insulated already, paint and epoxy floor in the spring, so the floor and walls have to stay pretty clean for a couple months.

Ungaraged car required lots of mice defenses, really clean car and clean cover and worst of all was driveway wrenching.

Re: Spent $20,000 on IROC and it's not faster!

Nice! Can't go wrong with a home for the toy(s). Planning ahead is good. I spend a lot of time out in our garage, it has a small separate lounging area with TV, refirg, couch, etc. It is very comfortable.

A lift is also a good idea. I have scissor truss ceilings, with 10ft side walls, 2 lifts in there.

You can get tons of decor for the walls, car related of course.

Re: Spent $20,000 on IROC and it's not faster!

You can not have enough outlets or lights in a shop. Figure what you think you need and double it.
I made out like a bandit with a yard sale light score. I got 7, 4' T12 twin bulb fixtures at a yard sale for $20.. I have 1 in center, and 3 down each side of shop. Still not enough light, so I bought 2 of the cheaper walmart T12 4' shop lights and put across front. Then I have a few reg. twin house light bulb fixtures placed in dark areas and over work spaces.

Try to zone wire your lights.. You will have times when you need all lights plus more on, but also many times where you will only need a couple lights on. I have my 14 light fixtures wired to 5 diff switches.

Put all of your outlets about waist or chest high. 3-5 foot long power strips across back or front of work bench are real nice to have.

Join garage journal asap, great board.

Floor space fills up FAST. Think about double use items and wall storage..

You need work benches, but why have a work bench with a tool chest sitting in a corner, or a bolt bin/cabinet next to it... Put the tool chest and cabinet under the bench.

The house we bought a couple years ago had a 24x36 shop, man i was so happy to have a 'big' shop.

Now almost 3 years later, I'm out of space. It's just not big enough lol... So I'm going back and moving things to wall storage and looking for ways just to make more room.

Make sure you have atleast 1 240 volt circuit, you never know when you will need it.
I have my own meter on my shop and a 200 amp panel and couldn't be happier.

Pegboard is never a bad idea! I have a total of 5, 4x8 sheets of pegboard up in my shop.. Some full sheets, some cut sheets and placed here or there as needed. I hang car parts and tools on pegboard, so I need it a little stronger.. My buddies just used little plastic or wood stand offs between wall board and pegboard, but that didn't seem stable enough for me. So I put a 1x2 wood frame on wall, screwed into studs, then mounted pegboard to that frame. Even ran some 1x2s across the frames in center on the bigger pegboard panels. If you do pegboard buy locking peg hooks, or std peg hooks and peg locks...Or even use zip ties to lock pegs in.. Without locks of some type every time you grab something the darn peg flys off board.

Also you need to think/plan on what you will be doing in you shop. I do a lot of engine builds, engine R&Rs, metal fab/cutting/welding so anything other than just a poured floor wouldn't be good for me.. Also I need steel top work surfaces in a couple places., etc.

If you do wood working, you might need a table saw and dust collection system, where i try to stay away from wood as much as I can.

What tools / must have tools really depends on what you do, like to do, hobbies, etc We know your a car guy (beautiful Iroc btw.) but with such a nice car, do you do any hardcore wrenching/building on it now? That one don't look like it needs a thing done to it at all. Plan to restore/build others?

Some of my "must have" tools are.....
Socket and wrench organizers in my tool boxes. Nothing is more aggravating than digging through a drawer of random sockets for 5-10 min to find that 1 size you need right now.
I love my cheap harbor freight socket trays.. Size is clearly marked, walk to box, open drawer, grab socket.
60 gal air compressor and array of air tools.
Mig welder (real mig with gas, not flux core)
Cutting torch
engine stands
engine hoist
jack stands (the more the better, I think I have 10)
hyd. floor jacks
Vise
Bench grinder
An assortment of cordless and corded power tools with my dewalt 18v recep saw, impact and 1/2" hammer drill and 4.5" corded angle grinder being the top picks.
14" Chop saw
Digital advance timing light
Vac gauge
Fuel pressure test gauge

I try not to have my shop too comfy.. I noticed in the past, comfy shop = not as much work getting done lol. I do have a computer with DSL ethernet cable (tired wifi but that just ticked me off as my shop is a metal building) , sound system/stereo, 240 volt window AC unit, floor fans, elec. heater, jobsite ready heater, 2 bar stools, 2 desk chairs, and a couple of low roller work seats out in the shop but that's as comfy as mine's gonna get.

Sorry for the random rambling, just typing out thoughts as they pop into my head.

That awesome price is because I did everything, but concrete, myself. I helped with concrete (laid rebar, vapor barrier)to lower the cost. $6300-4 inch floor, 18 " footings.

It took 4 months; of my regular job, coaching 2 hockey teams and about 4 hours a day on the garage. So with that, I thank my wife, she has been a single mother for 4 months. lol. Cheers to car-lovers wives.

Thanks Night Rider for the ideas, it is definitely food for thought.

While the car is clean and beautiful, it is almost 30 years old. I would like to upgrade suspension, brakes and refresh the interior.

Utimate goal is a stock appearance (why mess with perfection) LS3/T56 upgrade.

very cool man! Will you come build me one for my IROC? My IROC looks like yours almost...but I want mine to look like yours as I am missing the IROC decals and stripes, and IROC gold wheels.
Nice job man, really, I am happy for you and your IROC that it has it's own place to call home

Nice garage, nothing like storing car inside.

Before I had the height in new garage I used a 110v portable scissor lift for around 1500 and was very handy. Easier then jacks and creepers. Might be something to check into.

A microwaves pretty handy too. If you have any friends who work in the appliance business, can be handy on the workbench. I used a stainless steel subzero side panel for my workbench. Its 24 inches deep, allmost 7 feet long, and all stainless. I put a piece of 1/2 inch pl u wood inside and its super sturdu. Plus, since its stainless its easy to clean oil and grease off of
