race car interior
im trying decide whether or not to install the factory interior (dash, mouldings, carpeting etc) or not. I thinking of leaving the interior pretty much bare with a basic mounting for the gauges and such. The car is basically 90%strip car. I dont plan on driving it much on the street if at all. What im worried about is some race classes require an almost full interior but lately i have been hearing they are getting pretty loose with the rules on the interior. If anyone has pics of their interior to their race car , please post them.to help give me an idea . here`s mine.

Re: race car interior
^ lightweight but flame retardant carpet, either a gutted stock dash or one of the aftermarket composite replacements(if budget allows & you need the weight out), and forget about the rest of it.
I haven't looked for the flame retardant stuff myself but have seen some post about it on other forms. - Regular carpet can light up really quick and often the fumes are toxic; not something you want to chance in a race car.

Re: race car interior
Find out what race class you're going to be running in first. NHRA classes like Stock/Superstock require stock appearing interior but very few others require it. In the bracket classes, even a 15 second car doesn't need interior.
If you don't need interior, don't bother to go through the trouble of trying to install something. With a full cage already installed, trying to reinstall factory interior will probably be difficult if it wasn't planned to be reinstalled.

Re: race car interior
so no carpeting???
I think its sorta crazy for some classes making rules about the interior. My opinion on the matter is who cares about the interior its a race car. I was just thinking to put some mount for gauges, switches and calling it a day. I could make the stock dash work. and like everyone else said forget the rest.

Re: race car interior
what kind of classes do you want to run? personally I would carpet it and put in a fiberglass dash. I just personally don't like the look of a gutted car unless it's all fabricated sheetmetal or carbon fiber

Re: race car interior
I have factory replacement carpeting and all interior plastics besides a head liner which wasn't repairable. I prefer the street look as much as possible. The gutted factory dash is very light and wasn't worth the extra cost IMO.

Re: race car interior
heres mine. its going to be 80%street and 20% strip. still have most interior, but will have the option to go more towards strip later on. saved a ton of weight also. and no, i didnt go over the factory dash. i stripped everything out.

Re: race car interior
I only said carpet because so many of the stock-suspension type classes require it. If you don't need it for where you race, I wouldn't run it.

Re: race car interior
I agree. I'd take the 5-10lbs of interior plastic over the car looking like it's been gutted.
I do like some well done tin work with some bead rolls and stuff in them. step rolls too

Re: race car interior
That's a heck of a cage for a car that's not tubbed or back halfed. Are you building this car for an outlaw 10.5 or stock suspension class?
My car is a bracket car so I gutted it so I could go a little faster for less money and it makes it easier to work as far as wiring and such, besides the interior of my car was trashed when I bought it. Nothing beats the look of a factory interior in a fast car with a full cage.

Re: race car interior
On mine, I had to put a lightweight carpet and floor insulation back in to keep interior temps down while street driving. Without anything on the floor it seemed like it was melting the soles of my shoes.

Re: race car interior
I would cut up the factory dash and make up block off panels, personally I hate the aluminum dashes, but thats just me...light weight carpet..roll on...don't mess with that spay on crap...it's heavy..defeating a lot of purpose...

Re: race car interior
Try to put some of the interior back. Will take a badass build and make it look like some backwoods build. I believe the carpet may be called ozite? The bedliner products are not fire retardant and omg talk about fumes! Ask me how I know lol. Sprayed for many years. Sick cage I would like to see more of the car!

This how I did mine, we are required to have a complete stock appearing dash, cluster, etc in Stock.

Re: race car interior
Looking at doing a minitub or just box the front inner section of the rear wells but want to avoid damaging the interior plastics. Am I getting what you are saying...aside from the cage your interior and all rear plastics are intact and stock? If you could please message me I would love to know and see what you did. Currently running 295/55-15 M/T DR's and they are pretty much flush. Have a F-body Curie 9" that needs axles...now would be the time to shorten the tubes. Thanks, Scott
