86 TA 5.3

Well, more bad news, the wife totaled the trailblazer. It was the rarest model, the aluminum 5.3 setup. So, needing another ride on the road, the 5.3 from the TB will go into the 86 TA. Already removed the 6.0 and th400.

Trans is a 4L80 from the 01 3/4 ton silverado that got crushed.

The car will be running a 6010 ignition controller, FAST EZ TCU Trans controller, revmax 3800 converter, moser 12 bolt with 4.30s is still in the car.

I was going to run the 220/220 .510 lift 111 lsa edelbrock can that was for my 91 RS 4.8 swap, but decided to match it with a better cam. Ordered the edelbrock 2216 230/237, .540 lift on a 110 lsa.

So, will be daily driver material for a while. Cannot wait to see how it does at the track. If it traps anywhere near 90 in the 1/8th ill be happy since it is not a race car and will rarely be track used other than tuning or pure boredom.

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Literally CUT the aluminum 5.3 out of the Trailblazer today...

Cam will be here tomorrow. After i go to a interview today ill try to get this engine ready to throw the cam in and button it up. Not sure what the weight difference but many will probably not believe this is a 5.3 since it is aluminum im sure. Not that it matters.

Will be fun compared to the 5.3 i removed from it. Had 317s so was down on compression and a cam that was 225/229@.050 and a 114 LSA. Was a dog till 4500 RPM. The 2216 being on a 110 should be snappy and come to life around 300 i think.

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Revmax had some confusion and sent me a 4l60 converter, put a halt on everything. Motor is in. Went ahead and told them to make the new converter a 4000.

Got a comp engineering sub frame in, used some round tubing from home depot to make them work the way I wanted.

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Should have the drive shaft in tomorrow. Install the other sub frame. Finish the cooling system. Wire in the trans controller. Build trans X member. Find a home for the TQ arm. Try to make the dual 3 inch fit like it was so i dont have to pay to modify it. Install the shifter from the mustang and hook it up. Probably a few other odds and ends. Hope to be done tomorrow but i doubt i will.

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Removed the trans coolers, ran 3/8 through the radiator from the 80E. Got the megashifter installed, went to install the brackets and run the cable, exhaust was a issue. Nothing a chop or two and a weld did not get situated.

Great news is, they cut the drive shaft a bit longer than i needed. Not much, but it wont go in. Going to take it to them later and see what they can do for me.

Got the temp sensor back in as well. Also got the trans mount so i can get the other sub frame in and get a trans mount made and mod the TQ arm and mount it to the X member.

Are those tubes welded to the back of the subframe at least?

Re: 86 TA 5.3

No, they are not. Still have 2 more braces that I am going to weld in that will take the up and down force from the tq arm. The cross bar is for keeping the Trans centered. Was head scratching trying to figure out how to make all this happen. Seems excessive, but in the end, I am hoping the exhaust will clear a bit better. The old setup was pretty low usin angle iron and the stock rail location.

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Got he extra bracing done on the TA. Coated it with some rustoleum gloss black. Built the TPS sensor mount, got the cooling system filled and sealed. Ect ect. Threw the 750 carb on off the 6.0 and she fired right up. Need to do some tuning and get the other 750 rebuilt and installed. Needs exhaust work and i should be driving her again.

Excuse the sloppy left handed vid. Just figured i would give a idle clip for those wondering what the edelbrock 2216 cam sounded like.

better, but i still worry about that torque arm. is the cut just butt-welded together?

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Yes, the tq arm is the only thing that has me wondering because if the mounting location being forward of the bolting location. It will allow a slight tweaking of the mount. But, havin built the last x member with a 110 flux core welder and it never broke, I am thinking this 220 amp mug welder should have done twice the job on making deeper and stronger welds. I just could not picture a way to tunnel mount it with the mild steel I have laying around. That is what I wanted to do.

Re: 86 TA 5.3

Cleaned up the 6.0 carb so the floats weren't stuck. Took her for a little ride. I am pleased for not even having a good tune yet. Still has the 6.0 tune and i set the TCU to shift at 6400 to be safe. She wants more but the 198K mile 4L80 shifter flawlessly!

I am thoroughly impressed with the cam this far. The trans controller is still impressing me as well. The other is on a stock 4.8, so there was no testing its limits, but on this thing it is doing just as well as the one on the 4.8 and im sure im making over 100 more HP.

Just did this after some heating issues before i have to go to work tonight. The heater hose was leaking for some reason, dont need it anyway in this weather.

The work i did for the trans X member feels great. The car feels tighter as is with the sub frames, but the shifts felt like part of the car with no slop at all.

Now, to get exhaust for the noisy bastid.
