Re: clearcoat repair?
I also heard that you could get sand down the surrounding clear coat and pick up a can and respray it and it will look like new. In my case I plan on repainting it but not for a while so I might go down that path and maybe you should too unless you are just going to repaint the whole thing anyway. I'm just saying having one freshly painted body panel would annoy the heck out of me.

but, like you said it will "annoy you to have a freshly painted section" it will basically depend on the condition of the rest of the car if its worth it to do it the right way or the "just for now" way.

Re: clearcoat repair?
That just about sums up what I was trying to say. So doing it the just for now way could make it worse? What if you were to sand that whole panel of its clearcoat? Would it still happen then?

Re: clearcoat repair?
You could WET sand the peeling areas ! This will make the entire surface level.
Then re-spray the area with new clear coat.
You just have to be careful not to sand/burn thru the color base coat.

Re: clearcoat repair?
So you just have to sand what is peeling? Not the whole area? If so that would save alot of time because this area on my hood has gone to crap.

Re: clearcoat repair?
Again, it dsnt work that way, wherever the clear came off there's no more clear just paint,if you water sand you will cut through the paint, and if you dont sand it down, the clear has nothing to grab to so it will come off again....

Re: clearcoat repair?
Alright I got it but (yes another question) would a light sanding (light enough to smooth the clear out but not enough to go through paint. I am just willing to listen to anything that will make it look better until I can get it painted. Right now I have this 6x6 chunk of clearcoat about to come off along with some other problem areas.

Re: clearcoat repair?
Tell u what, get a sheet of 2000 wet sand paper and sand just a lil bit where the clear peeled, and you will see what happens.

Re: clearcoat repair?
if your careful you can scrape with a hard spatula and sand (with 600-2000 grit) most/all of the peeling clear off. just be careful to not sand through the color. I had the same problem on my rear 1/4 and roof, i was able to sand 90% of the bad clear off, and waxed the hell out of it and it looked better than peeling clear. or after you sand off the bad clear you could hit it with some clear, then buff the edges down as much as possible before the clear is completely hardened.
before anyone say's not to do what i just described, I've done it, and it WORKS for a temporary fix. it is in no way a permanent solution and you can tell its a patch job, but it looks better than crappy old clear and the op is planning on repainting soon anyways so...

Here I will post some pics of what I am working with:

Roof:
Hood:
This stuff on the hood happened right after the first snowfall and some of the stuff on the hood I found after I pulled the tarp off from which it was under this winter.

Re: clearcoat repair?
I understand that but you think this it is do able? How will I know when it is perfect on the trunk? Or do I sand it until it has grip to it (just a little bit) and then adding the clearcoat will make it look normalish again?

Re: clearcoat repair?
honestly, your clear is really bad, so your best bet is probably to chip/scrape as much off as you can without damaging the paint, sand down what you can until it starts taking the paint off then stop. then wax or zanio the hell out of it. i'm not a paint guy i just experimented and had some ok results. try a small, hard to see spot first before you go do and big areas.
is sucks, but your car needs a full repaint to ever look "right" again

Re: clearcoat repair?
i'd start with some scrapers (plastic), or plastic spatula and see how much you can chip/scrape off, then try to sand some. as soon as you start really getting into the color you need to stop. a little color coming of when you sand is ok but you have to be CAREFUL to not thin the paint to much of cut through it. it's really a trial and error thing. see what you can do getting the bad clear off before you look into new clear or anything. depending on your skill level and how bad your clear/paint is you may just make it worse.

Re: clearcoat repair?
alot has been said sence I first posted this question. The car got sold out from under me,but I got my 89 iroc that has some blistering trouble, why would the paint bubble up in a few spots? Big ones.Like silver dollar size. It only happened on the hood and just behind the t bar on the top.the rest of the paint looks great. Is it possible to sand down to the primer and tapper it out and repaint just the top of the car.I figure sanding down the hood and prime and repainting it would be the easyest way for that.what kind of clearcoat should I get to put on it?

Re: clearcoat repair?
You are killing me with your rants on clearcoat Mr. Chambers. This guy has a personal vendetta on clearcoat companies, I think he's a rep for Dupont Imron. As a sidenote, your rust bubble will spread, and become much more than surface rust. Save some money and get it fixed before next winter.

Re: clearcoat repair?
I had an 86 T/A with 50% of the clearcoat gone. I could not afford a paint job. I pressure washed all the clearcoat off without damaging the paint. I then buffed, polished, and waxed. Lots of wax (only thing that will now protect the paint). Pressure washer is 7 hp - 2800 psi.
It looked pretty damn good and cost next to nothing.
