In my chiltons manual, it says that the ESC system(electronic spark control) is used in conjuction with the EST system(electronic spark timing) to reduce spark knock by retarding the ignition timing. A knock sensor, which is installed in the cylinder block, sends a signal to the ESC module and then in turn to the ECM, which then adjusts timing accordingly.

If the ECM doesn't work, the engine won't run.
If you meant to ask what would happen if the ESC didn't work, you'd probably get knock from too much timing advance. Or false knock on the other hand, which would actually rob your engine of power randomly. It's hard to say which one.
