Door window guides/stops
Greetings,
Looking for someone that is familiar with inner-workings of a door. My drivers side glass goes up to far, like its missing a stopper of some kind near the front of the glass. I removed the door panel and found a white piece of plastic thats broke and it seems its supposed to be a L-shape. Looking for some help as to a replacement part and maybe a picture of where it's supposed to go. I'm thinking its supposed to be riveted to the glass. Thanks for you help.

Re: Door window guides/stops
I found this in another post. This is the piece I am after. Any ideas who might carry this. I looked through Classic Industries but didn't find it. I could start at the dealer. Just wondering if someone else has replaced this. The post I found this picture in didn't have an ending. Thanks

Re: Door window guides/stops
Not sure if you have an auto salvage yard near your area, but that would be the best way to find it and for a cheap price. You may take them off from some camaros and firebirds. Hope this helps. I haven't seen it online. But this may be the part number as it attaches to the bottom of the window: 20216825 (STOP, F/D Window up front glass) pic # 14.
Hope this helps.

Mine is broken too and am unable to find any replacement.
The part number seems correct as seen in the attachment below
but the number is no good on gm parts direct so I can assume they
don't have or stock it anymore. #85 in the parts list

Re: Door window guides/stops
I just ordered one from Nalley GMC for $24.50, Tonkin has this available also. This is a discontinued part, so it won't be long till the only resort will be a trip to the junkyard. I didn't want to go this route. Being in the desert, plastic dries out and I'm pretty sure this is why mine broke. If I did make a trip to the junkyard, chances are it wouldn't survive very long. Hopefully someone makes a reproduction of this item.

MS.........Are you sure you ordered the correct part?
The GM parts book list it at $1.05 each !!!!!!!!!!!!
I got the price from another GM parts list/description book.
Sure its from the 80s but it seems impossible for it to cost
$24 bucks now.....................

Re: Door window guides/stops
It is the correct part, I know its hard to believe a piece of plastic can cost so much. I was tempted to go to a salvage yard and pull one, but I didn't want one that was probably as week as mine was. I don't want to have to go back into my doors anytime soon. I also going to replace all weatherstripping and line the doors with sound deading. I already replaced a week outer door handle. I can post a picture of the new part if you would like.

Pics would be great. I'd like to see what it looks like and where it goes

Re: Door window guides/stops
Was this part being broken making your window catch on the t-top weather stripping? I thought it was the stripping on mine, but I put new stripping in and it STILL catches and has been driving me nuts. My car was in Arizona for alot of years, so perhaps this piece is broken on mine as well.

Re: Door window guides/stops
I guess in a sense it was catching the weatherstripping. When I would put the window up (power windows, not sure if its the same for manual) the front part of glass would almost push out of the triangle seal. The back of the glass would be fine. Hope this answers your question. I probably should have taken a picture of the window when this piece was broken.

Re: Door window guides/stops
the part you pictured is an up stop. they catch on the stabilizer that hodls the window in place at the top of the door. i have 4 of them. the weird thing is you can take them out and use the up stops on the door window channels, there is one already for the front not being used below the triangle filler and one on the rear in the channel that is vertical. i used different doors and windows on my car and the ones you refer to i removed them and used the up stops that were in the channels and were adjustable.
anyone have any idea what the down stops are? my window goes down too far.

My 84s window also goes down into the door too far and gets
caught on the bottom of the weatherstrip.
I also couldn't figure out where the lower stop was located either
as the door had never been disassembled before.
I just mounted a small block of wood to the base of the slide/guide
pole to use as a down stop.
Thanks to ted for this pic:

Re: Door window guides/stops
if you look at item 14 rear there is a nub on the bottom of the piece by the circle with a 15 in it. it bottoms out at the bottom of the door cavity, i put a few washers stuck together with sealant and was able to raise the window enough to kinda fix my issue. i believe the actual down stop is the spring on item 27 the regulator. whether the tabs are bent or the slotted pin in the center of the spring has rotated. the only way to fix this is to take the door apart again and get a new regulator. but those are the only two items that would stop the window from going down to far. i rebuilt my drivers side door and it works fine and stops where it should when all the way down.

Re: Door window guides/stops
I went to the hardware store, and found a large bottle stopper or plug. I drilled a hole through it, and countersunk the bottom. That way I was able to bolt & nut on to the place where the rivet was, and the countersinking made sure the nut would not hit bottom. Make sense?

Re: Door window guides/stops
Did you drill out the rivet hole while the window was on the car or did you remove the window first? What was the length of the stopper you used?
BTW, nice Speedway catalog out of focus in the background.

I'm not looking at my car right now, but that stopper should be accessible with it still installed, correct?

Re: Door window guides/stops
No finished pic.
I'm no artist, so please forgive my freehand.
Go to hardware store and get a bottle stopper with approximate width.
Drill hole thru center, and countersink the bottom (to recess the bolt head).
Put washer on bolt the same size as countersink hole, put it on the metal piece that is already on the window, put washer and nut on, tighten, and trim to fit.

How long was the stopper? I'm looking on Home Depot, etc. websites and I can't find what I think you are talking about.

Sweet. Thanks for the help.
"Item Not Sold at: Camarillo #1012"
That's what the Homedepot website says for me. That would explain why I couldn't find it when I went to the store the other day.
