Quick question Re: Exposed turbos
Just a quick question about exposed turbos...
Im in the process of making up a 'race hood' for the IROC that will have a bit of the turbo's compressor housing and inlet exposed.
My question was regarding what would happen if i got cought in the rain with it. Obviously hot metal cooling fast is very bad, but would it be SO HOT that the rain would evaporate before impacting and cracking the turbo?
Thoughts?

Car: Looking
well, look at it this way.
can you have the turbo stick out of the hood (IHRA Style, etc) yes. Theres just one big issue with doing it. You need to have a filter on it either way. The smallest piece of debris that can get kicked up off the road will destroy the turbine, and possibly your whole engine.
you can probably mount a K&N style filter right off the compressor. Ive seen drag cars with exposed turbos just put a very fine mesh "screen" over the inlet with a clamp (made to not get sucked in either).
It all depends how you're going to drive the car. I'm assuming is going to be a street car?

its a sound thought... however, that would mean, 1000s of the cars and trucks on the road today would be damaged just driving in puddles.
now, if you were pushing the turbo to the extremes, having it glowing red, then you soaked it, ehh, it might crack.
but i dont expect it to get used enough to get that hot in the rain.. lol.
as far as the intake, you NEED some kind of inlet cover.. on a street turbo setup, a filter is 100% needed.
on a race only setup, a screen is still recommended.

I was never intending to drive it without a filter. It has a K&N cone directly off the compressor right now.
Very good point about turbos getting expossed to the elements under the hood anyway. Thanks.

Im doing the very exact thing to my Z28's hood. My car isnt street legal and will only see track or strip. I plan on throwing a mesh screen just for cheap insurance and no installation isnt done. I bought a 4-3" silicone boot for the Throttle body and got more clamps.
This is the design im going for.

What size is that alternator? Looks like a CS-130 (pass. side mount). I have only seen them as a driver's side mount. Is it a serpantine belt setup?
Will the stock TPI rubber boot handle boost? I think I read a few posts about them tearing at the seams.

I think (hope) youll find that pic is just a mock-up for fittment, as there is only one clamp on the flexi-join :S

That stupra setup is very similar to what i was planning.
This is the car that i saw that i wanted to copy the hood/scoop off.
The scoop down to expose the inlet and the bulge over the housing to guard it all...

Although as i need to keep it semi legal, i thought i wouldnt have the lower scoop section so i could still use a pod filter, then make a removable 'hump' that could cover it all up.
As this detailed CAD schematic shows...
