.48AR stage 1 turbine
TO4E 60trim compressor
3.1L
cam:
212i 212e @.050" lift (maybe a little more due to 1.6 rockers)
.470"i .470"e max lift with 1.6 rockers (with matching springs)
8.5:1 static compression ratio
all else stock
boost begins around 2500 (1psi)
I can hold the brake and floor the gas and not spin the tire (no boost builds either), but I don;t make a habit of doing it.
torque converter seems to stall around 2000rpm.
full boost (5psi) by 2800rpm. At 4500rpm the car feels like its being choked out by the turbo. I believe the turbine could be too small, but the turbo was free ('87 2.2L turbo Lancer turbo with compressor upgrade). Wouldn't it make boost much sooner if the compressor was small enough to choke this motor at 4500 rpm.
does anyone think a .63 AR with the stage 1 wheel would improve the situation? or am I better off still with a .63 and a stage 3 wheel?

I am not sure if this helps but I run two .63 A/R T3 Nissan 300zx (originally a V6 3.0 liter) turbines and boost (1 psi) starts at 2800 RPM. This is on a 5.7 liter with 8.6:1 CR, 216* I/E @ .050" cam, 110 LSA, LT1 intake, 3.08 gears, TH350.
I don't know what the turbine stage is because I didn't know enough to measure the wheels when I clocked them. Maybe Google will give the stage of the wheels.

junk what year turbos? i think i remeber reading that after 19xx whatever the year was that garret went to stage 3 wheels in all the turbos.so that may help determine what they are.ill have to see if i have te info bookmarked..
ttype im betting that .48 is choking it even a t3 stage 3 .63 slightly chokes my motor.
if u can get a 63 stage 1 housing i would try that as its prolly much cheaper then buying a stage 3 wheel and housing

A lightly used t3 stage 1 .63AR turbine housing sold on ebay for $149.06+15shipping! I'm pretty sure I could get one brand new for $15 cheaper than that! I was surprised. For that money I could buy a whole new ebay turbo... they're going for as cheap as $130+24shipping and they have what they claim to be a stage 3 .63AR turbine. I dunno if they're actually stage 3 or not, but they're larger than my brother's stage 1 garret turbine.
I used the dynamic front seal from an ebay t3/t4 on the garrett turbo in question in this thread. The stock t3 compressor uses a carbon seal and the t4 upgrade uses a dynamic seal. I didn't think to notice when I bought the compressor upgrade that the backing plate was different from the carbon seal backing plate to pre order the parts needed. So out of curiosity I opened up the ebay t3t4 to see if they were interchangable. They were. The garrett turbo used to have a very small amount of end play, now its all gone due to the new front seal and thrust bearing from the new ebay turbo. Maybe I'll practice doing the 360 thrust bearing upgrade to the ebay turbo since its easier (cheaper) to replace.

the ebay turbos have what almost specs out as a stage 3 turbine.it measures right but what gets me is i was under the impression that all stage 3 wheels have 10 blades.the ebay ones have 11 blades
so im curious now u did buy and ebay turbo and swaped the compressor over?

no, just swapped the front dynamic oil seal and thrust bearing. I bought an Airesearch (same as garrett) compressor housing, wheel, and backing plate, but the stock garrett backing plate used a carbon seal. I didn't notice that I wouldn't be able to swap the old seals to the new backing plate untill it was too late, so I borrowed the front seal and thrust bearing from an ebay turbo that was meant to go on my car in the future. It fit perfectly.
the t4 60 trim wheel makes the ebay wheel look a little small. the inducer is 2.290"(Airesearch) compared to 1.990"(ebay). Those .300" difference look like a big difference side-by-side.

yeah the ebay turbo is only a 46 trim this is why it has a diff sized wheel.
why dont u bolt that t4 60 trim wheel and compressor cover onto that ebay turbo u have and give it a test on ur brothers car to see how well it works before u go out and buy a new turbine housing for it

from what I read about turbo balancing, the ebay turbos are balanced as a complete assembly. The parts of the chrysler turbo were separatley neutrally balanced. I'll probably sell the garrett (chrysler) turbo and see if we can get something else.

if u want i have what i belive is a t3 stage 1 .82 hotside. well i know its an 82 just dont know if its a stage 1 or not but i could measure it real fast.

that sounds like an awesome idea, but it would require re-drilling the chrysler style inlet flange (or buying a new ford style to weld on), either buying a new flapper valve or an external wastegate (and outlet flange), and fabricating a new downpipe, with an O2 sensor.
I'm willing to do the work required, but we don't have the money right now. We're looking at like $150 (not counting the actual turbine housing) for flanges, wastegate, and downpipe. I think we should just leave the motor alone to get it broken in a little longer. It has like 100 miles on it.
the car actually has really good midrange from 2800 to 4200. Now that its tuned, it surprised me a little in that range with only 5 psi of boost. Just the turbo chokes it out pretty bad up top, and the tranny likes to shift around 5500-5600 at wide open.
I'm definately gonna keep that offer in mind though, thanks.

alright man let me know, i even have the downpipe elbow for it it has the internal wastegate. except i pluged the hole in the housing with a pipe plug but u can take the plug out if u want to use the internal gate..
btw it has a 3 bolt grand national inlet, not a standard 4 bolt t3

I've got a .63 T3 turbine from a GN (3 bolt) like Dave's does, and a 1/4 mild steel flange for it too, 35 to your door if you're interested. Your choice of if it comes with the elbow that has the WG flapper in it or not.

do these wastegate elbows point in the correct direction or would I need to modify them? correct direction meaning straight back down in the same direction of the inlet.

I counted 3/4 of my ebay turbos have 12 blades on the turbine... the other has a downpipe on it in my car so I didn't bother.

now im gonna have to pull my downpipe and check mine,im pretty sure it was 11 and some of the other pll i know with them said it was 11, though i may just be off one number myself
