Just out of curiosity, I looked at the machining receipts for my last small block rebuild. The block totaled at $575 for a 2 bolt main that I supplied, 2 piece rear main, and no roller cam castings....

Are you using a set back timing light? If not, try using one and slowly rotating the dial until you see your timing mark on the balancer at the Zero mark on the tab. Look at the timing light scale...

You should probably take it to a shop that does A/C work. I would guess that you are going to open up a line somewhere which is why you want to discharge the system. Once open, moisture from the air...

You can generally search for a vacuum leak by spraying carb cleaner around the vacuum fittings, carb base, tbi base, etc and if there is a leak then your idle should rise quickly and then drop down...
