Small block Chevys were "virtually" unchanged from 1955 through the end of its run in the early 2000s, with some notable exceptions.

The original '55 Chevy engine had no block-mounted oil filter....

It has been a little while since I had my '88 GTA with AKXY.

I "think" AKXY did NOT use VATs but ARAP does. You may need to uncheck the VATS box in the ARAP bin.

I would ALMOST bet a penny that it is a cracked flexplate. From my experience with small block Chevys, rear main bearings just don't go bad before the front main.

The rear main gets oiled first...

The cracks often show on the cylinder case wall inside the lifter valley.

Imagine where the push rods go to the rocker arms. Right along there.

Most of the cracks I've seen were horizontal....

With a bad or weak battery, trying to recharge the battery with the engine running puts too much of a load on the alternator, eventually burning the alternator out....

As silly as it sounds, make sure the carpet, dash insulation, wiring or floor mat next to the gas pedal is clear. I've personally seen floor mats cause similar...
