If you have a AutoZone close by they have a cooling system pressure tester kit in their loaner tools, or if you know someone that has one. You can use that to also find out where the leak is.

Really sounds like the fans are not coming on at all. Even with the a/c compressor gone if you put the controls to ac it should still trigger the fan. With the knock sensor not hooked up it should be...

Are you sure it is running hot and not just a bad temp sensor ?
Yes the lean condition can cause it to run warm, but shouldn't affect it much at idle. You may try and setting the timing back to 0...

Chance are that when you first start the car the choke butterfly is 100% closed and after a short time it starts to load up and will die out especially if you put it under load by putting it in gear...

Ok, now I guess I'll chime in on this one.
Yes MS carbs are better on man.trans cars especially in racing apps., but both will work fine IF TUNED PROPERLY !!
I would stick with a spread bore....

Yep, That's the one. On the 92 it's a snap it bezel and the socket will accept a 161 bulb which is a little over a watt brighter than the 74.
