Re: Good place for organized racing in Southern Cali?

In San Diego they run 1/8th mile drags every Saturday night at the Qual Com parking lot. In the Los Angeles metro area, Irwindale Speedway has 1/8 mile drags on Weds nights, if I rmember correctly. The only 1/4 mile tracks still operational at this time are LACR in the desert (closing soon, but not sure when). That track has a lot of wind with resulting sand blowing which doesn't help traction or your car's finish. Fontana runs street legal drags3 or 4 times a year. The millionaires living near the Pomona track have gotten theat track restricted to only a few meets per year, so they only run a few professional events. I suspect that wihtin a few years, Pomona will be forced to close and the races will move to Fontana. They are building a track in the Beaumont/Banning area that is scheduled to open in June, but I don't know if it will be open then or what sort of schedule they will run. They get a lot of wind up there, but I don't think there is as much sand to blow near that track as there is at LACR.

Yea we are hurting for 1/4 tracks around here. Theres irwindale which is 1/8th mile but i know its not a full 1/4 mile track. Terminal Island fell and that was that. Seems like many old timers have stories of that track. They shut it down just as I got to know it was there Pomona is next to fall to the condo craze so we're going to have to drive further and further to get our fix!

There are basically three places. Irwindale 1/8 mile, CA Dragway 1/4 mile, and Famoso Raceway 1/4 mile.

That's Perris and it's only 1/8 mile. They are thinking about making it a 1/4 mile but brand new housing across the street just might have a say in it.

I want to know what the heck this top secret place is I found in the desert above Lancaster. Looks like a tire testing ground. That high speed outside track is 8miles long!

Google earth 35*15'30.00 N / 117*57'33.00 W

There is another one just like it a few miles south of this one also.

Last year at the Car Caraft Anti-tour we went to San Diego and they were running 1/8th mile drags on a course set up in the Qual Com parking lot on Saturday nights. I believe the program was sponsored by the SDPD & SD County Sherriff's Dept. to try to get the racers off the streets of San Diego County. Has that program been closed?

The last report we had on Banning was that the track was supposed to open in June, any more word on that track?

Re: Good place for organized racing in Southern Cali?

I think (I've heard) it is a Toyota test site...not sure, I've only seen it from the air.
P.S.: I've been to LACR 20 or so times. Unless it is a really windy day (which we have in the Antelope Valley), it's a fine track, at least for 10-20 second cars. I've had traction problems, but it wasn't from sand!
