Scrapping a Car Body

Has anyone parted a car out to the point where no motor or trans were left? If so, how did you get rid of the car body? I'm guessing the junk yard will not want a car with basically just the metal skin and carpet left. Did you have to pay a fee to scrap it?

I'm considering parting my vehicle out if no one buys it whole. I'm assuming no one would want the body by itself. It's fairly straight, but definitely needs a paint job.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Scrapping a Car Body

I scrapped out my car in July. It had nothing left not even the carpet.
I took the title and towed the car to the junkyard and they gave me $30 for scrap metal.

I'm still not sure I did the right thing, whether the junk yard notified the DMV, but I kept the receipt they gave me just in case.

I still have the doors if anyone wants them let me know.

Re: Scrapping a Car Body

Thanks Julie. My concern was that I'd have to pay for them to take it, or that they wouldn't take it at all. In case of the latter, I'd have to cut it up and throw it in the dumpster piece by piece.

Hopefully someone will at least want the body, if not the whole car.

Re: Scrapping a Car Body

I have scrapped many with less on it than what you mentioned. I just took one this past Monday. Nothing but the shell, rear hatch and front windshield left on it. Removed K member and all suspension, engine, trans, interior, everything.

Look for scrap metal dealers, crusher, metal recycling.. They only want the metal to crush and resell. Not really interested in the parts like a junkyard is.

They pay by weight. Scrap is down right now. In my area in GA. they are paying $4.50 per 100 lbs.. It was up as high as $11.70 per 100 lbs a year ago.

The shell of a 1984 Z28 I took monday only weighed a little over 800 lbs (That tells you how much I stripped off of it) and I got $38 for it.

Re: Scrapping a Car Body

I actually ended up selling my car body. It still had some parts left on it, but I took off the drivetrain/rear end/gas tank/suspension and most of the interior. I ended up selling for $300. Guy who bought said he wrecked his car and was going to use mine to swap everything over.
A buddy of mine cut up the shell of his fox body mustang and got rid of it piece by piece lol.

Night, you should think about keeping a few of those rear hatch/glass units. A friend broke his and had to drive 200m round trip and was charged 160 for it. Up here in MN cars dont last long, so if we want something, chances are we have to go out of state (south) to find it.

Re: Scrapping a Car Body

Thanks all. Sounds like my fear of having to pay a big fee to dispose of it is unlikely.

Yeah man, I really want to keep the hatches but for right now they are just too big/heavy/bulky to store safely. As I move forward with this venture and maybe build a large building just to store parts in, then I would for sure save all of the rear glass/hatch.

Right now for me, it's all able usable space and what is more worth keep in that space.

Re: Scrapping a Car Body

Me three, I felt bad about getting rid of the hatch too.

I wanted to keep the GTA spoiler, and it had special attachments not on the stock hatch, and it took four people to lift it to do the swap.

Must weigh like 200lbs. Nobody wants to pay to ship that.
