strange rotor wear

i need help. this is for 89+ type rear brakes. i cut the rotors installed new pads. i took it for a drive but noticed that my brakes are still not like they should be. i inspected the rotors and found something strange. while looking at the outside of the rotor, on it's outermost half, the rotor shows wear. the inner half of the rotor still appears freshly cut . what could be causing this? worn guide pins? any please help. i want to have decent brakes. thanks for any help.

update. i removed the wheel for further inspection. the inside of the rotor shows hardly any wear??? yet the outer portion of the outside of the rotor does? something is very wrong here. i tried a new set of guide pins and they fit loosely in the caliper carrier. so i guess i need new caliper carriers? why do the inside my rotors show hardly anywear? are my calipers shot? not working worth a ****? that might explain why i the car does not have the stopping power it should?.

with out seeing them, it sounds like to me that your caliper/s is warped. if you were to look at your old pads and the outer part was worn more then the inner (this could be a the problem)so by cutting your rotors and new pads the first part to hit the rotors would be the top of the pads (IF THE CALIPERS ARE WARPED)take a look maybe thats the problem.

i am having some serious deflection going on. that's the problem i think. i have ordered all new calipers, caliper carriers, ebrake assembly, caliper backing plates(10 bolt), (i have a 9bolt) and all other related hardware for both sides. hopefully it will alleviate the problem. if not oh man this car is gonna pay...... this car is taking alot more money than a hooker ever would have... :sillylol:

I'm not sure about thirdgen rear pads, but I've seen some GM pads that are thicker towards the outer edge of the pad. Not sure, but I think it was to prevent excess pedal travel at the pads wore down. I would check the pads out first before you go spending all kinds of money.

i bought some wagner thermo quiet pads $55. the were flat/level. i checked it out when i bought them. are the calipers supposed to move back and forth while mounted on caliper carrier. no, not sliding back and forth but, side to side. (ex from inside rotor to outside of the rotor) that direction of movement. deflection? excessive movement? thanks for help though. open to suggestions....

Bringing this back from the dead, I just installed a disc rear tonight and I'm getting the same wear you described on the right rear disc. Only on the outer most part, on both sides of the rotor, did you ever get this thing fixed?

i replaced the caliper carriers as well as the guide pins and it seem to make it the pads wear more evenly across the surface. the new guide pins fit very loosly in the old carriers and much tighter in the new ones. now i rememeber GTP.

since mid 05' i have replaced the 3rd gen rear with a 98'+ type. much better design IMO.

How much were those parts? Did you have a grinding noise like I do?

i don't recall how much the parts were. (about 3 years ago) if it's making a scraping noise, check & make sure the carrier is centered on the disc properly. when checking for clearance, make sure to pull on the disc/axle in & out to check that it doesn't make contact (secure the disc to the axle with lug nuts). A friend's PBR rear was making scraping noises around corners. this was the problem. adding shims(washers) to center the caliper carrier solved that problem(carrier scraping the rotor).

Well, I just got a new rotor since it's cheaper than a new caliper....hopefully it fixes it because the pads are fine...again hoping. If not it's $70 for a reman'd caliper.

But before I do that and I check what your talking about, where do I add washers to the caliper? I'm sure it's straight forward when I remove it.

Thanks!

Well, the new rotor didn't fix the problem. Nor did adding washers. Grinding still present as caliper carrier eats my rotor. I put the old rotor back on in the meantime, no use destroying a brand new one.

I can pull the wheel and disc out 1/4-1/3 and inch, back and fourth.
