Can someone tell me if a 9" wide wheel is too wide for a 235 50 17 tire?

I found a set of imitation Torque Thrust 2 17" wheels on ebay delivered for appx. 500 bucks. Would 8" be better? Has anybody seen these?

way too narrow for a 9" wheel. hell, I wouldn't even put a 235 on an 8" wheel.

Why not just get the right 275/40/17s for the 9" wheels?

'cause I have a set of 235 50 17 I got for free and I'm looking for rims to fit it, and wide enough to go larger tire later on.

How wide is a stock 15" rim? Would other people run 235 50 17 on a 8" rim?

It will physically fit but its generally not recommended, and not considered safe. The tire is more likely to break the bead if you hit a pothole or something. I'm kinda familiar with stretching tires because I'm into drifting, do it quite often. The tire guy might not be able to do it, there is a technique to mounting stretched tires. Usually the bigger the sidewall is the easier it is to do. And then there is the look. I personally like the look if the sidewalls are small (so 45 and smaller). Here is a picture of 235/45/17 Kumho's mounted on 17x9.5 wheels.

A 235-50-17 is too tall, you need either a 235-45-17 or a 245-45-17 tire. And the minimum you should go on a 9" wheel is a 255 tire.

Help me out here, will a 8" rim fit a 235 tire? I know a 45 series is probably better but this is what I have.

Tire manufacturers generally suggest that the width of the rim (measured from inside to inside of the bead retaining lip) does not exceed the tread width of the tire and is not more than 1 to 1 1/2" narrower than the tread width. If a wheel is either too wide or too narrow the tread does not lay flat on the road. The sidewall does not flex properly which reduces traction, increases tread wear, causes the tire to build excessive heat which leads to tire failure or causes the driver to try to correct the above problems with improper air pressures which is also an unsafe condition leading to tire failure.

Yes a 17x8 rim can physically mount a 235/50/17 but like everyone is saying its not going to be recommended or optimal. I understand that you are just trying to use what you have, but if this is going to be for daily driving and stuff you might want to consider selling the tires because they are odd sized for what you want to do. I'm posting these examples and stuff to show its possible but I'm not trying to say its the smartest thing to do. When I play around with stretching tires its for drifting and doing burnouts and donuts and stuff, I wouldnt do it on my daily driver.

You should E-bay your small tires, and spend the difference getting the correct tire for the application. Your end results will be much better, and ultimatley make you happier that you made the choice to up-grade to a better wheel/ tire combo. I moved from 16x8 W/ 245'S to a 17X8 W/255'S, and this made a big difference in feel. I then went from 17x8 to a 17x9.5 w/ 275 x4, this was a whole new world. I won't ever run small tires again unless for a specific purpose. As some women say BIGGER is BETTER
