Has anyone removed their smog pump?

I just followed the instruction from the tech article. Worked out great, but I think the belt was a little tight IMO. The belt I put on wore out after a few months, so the next time I increased by 1-2CM. The tensioner seems to have the proper tension on it now. Took about 15-20 minutes taking my time.

Unbolt the bitch, disconnenct all the hoses coming off of it, and throw the damn thing in the garage. Not hard at all. As mentioned previously though, you will need a shorter belt. Do a search for "smog pump" and you will probably find a part number for the new belt. Or at least a length.

it will pass inspection. the pump is only to help the cat come up to operating temp upon initial start up from cold. it actually turns off after a few mins of running and just drags on the motor slightly.

People, do a check in the tech articles. They have the belt length listed. I'm not trying to be short with all of you but come on. The first place to go at this site is tech articles THEN board.
To continue on NJSpeeders comment about the pump helping the cat get up to operating temp: That's right on. Basically the pump injects fresh air (with Oxygen) into the exhaust. This increases the temp of the exhaust gas because the oxygen burns and the cat warms up. It works pretty good and it's been proven that the pump on our cars doesn't really suck away power like those 70's smog crap. The only real gain is weight. I probably would have had mine reinstalled but something got into the pump and it wasn't turning. I think the bearing went but I'm not sure. I would only bother taking it off if you are going to do other weight savings like removal of AC and fiberglass hood. To take it off just because is not a good excuse. I'll bet nobody can prove to me that removal actually increased their horsepower. It's basically an alternator fan! It's such a low pressure pump that it draws MAYBE 1hp at like 4500 just because it needs a longer belt!
To each his own, go for it but do other stuff or it won't be worth your time.
