just got brand new intake
so i just got my vortec 305 heads and an edelbrock performer rpm vortec intake, but i'm not really sure how everything id going to work. there's no egr on the new intake but i'm not worried about that, i'm not really sure how to run vacuum to the brake mc, and there is no coolant passages on the back of the manifold or anything to run the coolant hose to the front where it connects to whatever that plastic thing is for the heater.
has anyone used this intake? and if so how did it all work for you?
old intake
new intake

Re: just got brand new intake
You should have done a bit of research before ordering. There will be some fabrication involved in making this intake work. Basically hook up vaccume to vaccume and water to water........you'll be digging through the parts bins at your local parts store for most of these fittings. The second biggest problem is going to be the throttle cable bracket. You'll either have to fabricate something or find some where that sells one that fits the vortec intake. This isn't so much of a vortec problem as it is a high rise intake problem.
The biggest problem is that there is slim to no chance this will fit under your firebird hood. You are going to need to use the thinnest adapter plate you can find and even then getting even a 2" air filter to fit will be tough. I've heard of some guys getting this intake under a camaro hood, but not a firebird hood.

Re: just got brand new intake
oh i love a challenge, lol well i've got access to a machine shop with a metal break and welders and everything you would need to make a custom bracket. maybe i'll end up getting a stock firebird hood and cutting out for the air filter and putting a cowl scoop on it. i will find a way to make it work. even if i have to run without a hood for a while. the adapter i got for the intake is .25" tall, and obviously my .5" spacer isn't going to do me any good anymore.

Re: just got brand new intake
as far as i can tell, the new intake is 1" taller than the old intake, and the old intake with a .5" spacer fit with about .25" clearance under the hood, so if i get a shorter filter everything should fit pretty decently, but i guess i'll find out tomorrow

Better recheck those measurements, I vaguely remember it being around 2" difference between intakes.
Best way to measure is lay a strait edge across the carb mounting flange and then measure down to the fron and rear china wall.

Re: just got brand new intake
yeah it was late at night when i measured but i did lay a atraight edge across the top although i had it on top of the tbi unit and i had a different tbi unit on each intake. i'm not really worried about it, i'll make it work.

Re: just got brand new intake
looks like it'll all fit without any real problems, i took some pictures and i'm pretty sure i know how i'm going to run everything now. everything is just mocked up so far and not really tightened down, i wanted to see how things would work together before it was permanent.

Re: just got brand new intake
It looks ok, but make sure you check before closing the hood. I still have the outline of a wingnut on the underside of my hood from closing it without checking first. If in desperation, you can also raise the stops at the rear of each hood linkage. Looks stupid, but it works...

Re: just got brand new intake
Where you have the strait edge isn't where I would be worried, it's the front edge of the air cleaner that looks to be in the way. Also the hood starts at the top of the fenders, it has some thickness to it so in reality you need to have about 1/2" of clearance with the strait edge.
Then again the hood probably has some curvature to it that may give you some room. I would get some silly putty and check it out the first time you close the hood.

only thing i'm worried about right now is getting the thing to start. i think my battery is shot because it wont take a charge and when you try to turn it over the starter just ticks

Re: just got brand new intake
no hood clearance issues! even with the wingnut on the air filter. this is with the formula power buldge hood. i dont know how it would fit under a stock hood. pictures tomorrow, camera batteries are dead. thanks for all of your guys' input
