Custom chips

I live in Florida where there is no emissions laws or checks and I hate emissions and stock tunes with a passion because all car makers want you to buy there friends oil. I have hallowed the cat and I have a full exhaust headers back, and I will be removing EGR and the smog pump but for the time being I need a chip to remove emissions and speed limiter. Now I know people tell me about tuning and I would get better results from a dyno and my own equiptment but tuning is where I fall short on a car with fuel injection. I have a performer intake and a performer 650 carb I could just throw on there but I like the TBI and would like to keep the economy minus the emissions that just choke the engine. So to all of those with the equiptment how much would you guys charge if I got the chips and provided you with what ever info you need. I will be doing upgrades like ported or vortech heads and port matching and high flow TB but thats for a time to come when it is time to do a top end job. So when that comes I will need another chip but that will be a while.

Re: Custom chips

I'm sure some people on this board will read this and hate me for it but here it is. Tbi is hard to tune. Without datalogging it is a hopless road many have traveled, myself included. I am now on my 7th mail order chip and it is garbage. I dont like this but the truth is you cant just tell somone what you have and them burn you a great chip. It just wont happen. You can spend 2 or 300 on a chip and it may run the engine, but definetly NOT with any success. If you dont have the equipment, software, and you dont know how to tune a tbi, but you want significant performance, your up creek without a paddle. If you now how to work with that carb, then thats the ticket. You may lose 1 or 2mpg but on a dyno that nicely tuned carb will show that crappy tuned tbi up time and time again. Also dont try to get rid of the egr, tbi wont operate correctly without it, and even if you know how to pull it off, you will lose 2 or 3 mpg in doing so.

Re: Custom chips

I beg to differ on the on hard to tune TBI comment. I knew nothing about tuning chips and datalogging 2 years ago, and with some help on here from some people, i figured it out pretty quickly, and then its fairly easy. But you will only see real advantages if you have done some significant mods to your engine. Your not going to get a whole lot out of it on a stock engine. Read the sticky "Come in for a free tune" there is alot of info on the subject for people wanting to get started from scratch. And punching a few key on a keyboard is alot cleaner than tearing apart a carb to get it right!

Re: Custom chips

Well the carb was used on my nitrous 355 that was in my old 83 z28 so it will need to be re-jetted. The only problem I have with the carb is that my girlfriend is not really familiar how to use a choke and she would have to know how to operate it. As far as the pre ordered chip thing I have dealt with some of the companys and most of the time you don't get what you want and you end up sending it back till they get it right.

Re: Custom chips

Bro trust me on this, mail order chips are false advertisement. I have gone threw 3 hyper craps and am on my 4th tbichip.com. I can tell you rite now it doesnt matter if you send it back 5x or 6x its NOT going to run as good as a custom tune by somone(if not yourself) that is sitting in the car as it is running with a laptop to logg every little thing. Without datalogging it is inevitably a hopless road. I wouldnt tell you this to screw with you, Im telling you it cause when your car is sitting there for 3 or even 4 weeks begging you to taker out and you cant because your waiting for some 2 or 300$ chip to show up in the mail, you may wish you had just told your girl " hey baby, if it dont crank rite up, just pump the peddle a little." But hey just my opinion, and opinions are like a$$h0les, full of $h1t and everybodys got one. I hope your content with whatever you decide to do.

Re: Custom chips

If they are that close then maybe you can take the car over there and have them datalog.

Just kind of a side note but I am going to gtech my tbi setup before I swap to tpi in the next 2 or 3 weeks, then I will gtech the tpi setup.
