Air Cleaner Swap
There was an article I saw in GM High Tech Performance a while back featuring a '91 Camaro RS that I liked. Seeing as I also owned a '91 RS I wanted to build my car somewhat like this guys. I was fortunate enough to find him through FQuick. He told me about the air cleaner he had and seeing as I live overseas I can't get parts. So when my dad had a buisness trip he picked me up a X Stream Air Flow Top part number 66-3040. Supposedly it is the same one this guy has on his car. I have a 305 TBI stock motor. I can't put the air cleaner on with the stock stud in the TBI because my throttle is in the way. How do I get the new K&N Stud on I have posted pics to go along maybe you guys can help. Someone else must have done this on here.

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
Hi Mitchell it is Jacob! Sorry to hear you are having trouble with the install. I'm a little confused about what the issue is, though. What is hitting the throttle? The bottom of the Aircleaner base??? I used the 2" drop base on mine, but I have the Edelbrock TBI intake and 1" Spacer so that's what I needed to compensate for the added height to my throttle body.

That sounds right. You could also buy a Thottle Body Spacer and raise it up a bit and use the stock stud. That would be more $$ though and it soulds like parts are hard for you to track down outside of the US. Let us know what you do and when you get it set up. It will be worth the work when you get it done!

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
Well, I am very disapointed I thought this would work no problem. Not to mention my dad spent 2.5 houres getting to the speed shop from the hotel and 2.5 houres back. And he spent triple the money because that stuff is very expensive in Austrailia. I might be getting a carburated 350 soon so I may just wait and put my K&N on that. If you guys have any other ideas let me know.

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
a throttle body spacer wont solve his problem. the air cleaner is hitting th elinkage because you removed the spacer or what? im kindof lost with this whole situation

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
Basically I have a new stud from K&N but can't seem to get the thing in. The stock one is to short and is in the front and bends out. You could see what I mean by looking at the picture. The stud is the problem.

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
your air cleaner lid bottom is a drop base probably...you need a non drop base.
and the stock tbi stud will work fine...just turn it out a few turns to get it to come up alittle higher so you can get the wing nut on it

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
youd think so. but i dont know for sure. I know i put a flow thru lid on my stock aircleaner, i bought a k & n but its designed for the truck replacement one and the stud it came with is curved like a stock one. thier is no way you can get a coupler of some sort and thread the stock into one end and a straight into the other end and into the throttlebody? or you can. welll i know it would look tacky, possibly weld the old one to the new one and thread the new one in? those are a couple of options. bending the new one is an option too. put it in a vise. heat it up a little and bend it over and then bend it again.

Like I said,
Bend the universial stud to match the bend in the stock one. It will work, I just did the same thing last week.
Another option is to flip the lid over, so the stock stud will reach.

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
Hi,
Currently I have the same setup, you need to use the spacer you shown in the one pic, and the if you are using a 1" drop base air cleaner, it will hit the throttle linkage.
I'm using EDL-1221 by Edelbrock, it's dropped 0.625 of an inch, as the 1 inch version hit the linkage, dropped too much.
I also had to use this stud ( http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/4215/10002/-1 ) to make it right, as a 3" k&n filter was too big and it wouldn't screw on, this stud has the appropriate bends, you are out of country tho, so i'm not sure how this stuff works for you.
Or, you can ditch the air cleaner spacer, and get a "Non drop base" but you might also need the new stud as well.
Also, changing the stud won't make a difference your air cleaner will still hit the linkage, you need a different air cleaner base.

Re: Air Cleaner Swap
Thanks for the help guys. I don't really want to bend the stud because may be getting a 350 soon and I want to use the K&N on that. I just wanted to put the K&N on in the mean time. Thanks for all the help I will try using that spacer that is in my pics. I am just having a hard time getting the stock stud out as I don't know how.
