non third gen tech Starter on 92 Caprice
I have a 1992 Caprice with a 350, and it needs a new starter. The thing is a B*tch getting out. Can anyone offer some advice!?!
It is a horribly small space with a big starter, if you know what I mean!

remove the inspection cover that covers the TC and flywheel. then remove the 2 bolts holding the starter up and then unhook the wires and make sure u get the right starterand do the steps i gave u in reverse.
the inspection cover has i think 4 bolts holdin it in and then there the starter with 2 bolts.

I know exactly what you mean. It's even worse with full dual exhausts, a reduction gear starter, factory oil cooler lines, 2 inches less ground clearance, etc.
You need to remove the front brace from the starter and block before removing the starter itself.
NOTE: If you have a Delco-Loc or Theft-Loc II system on your radio, make sure you disable the security feature first, then disconnect the battery cables.
Once the brace is removed, the starter SHOULD clear the knock sensor. You may have to unplug the sensor to make for easier access. You may also have the lower body brace across the area in question, plus those stupid dead weights bolted to the exhaust that are supposed to dampen vibrations. The brace would need to be unbolted and removed to get starter access. If you have a bass boat or small skiff, the dampening weights make a great one-time anchor.
Fun, ain't it?

Arghhh, this this is a pain!!!! The exhaust and that brace are the only things keeping me from just pulling it staight in and out. Thought about going ahead a cutting the exhaust in favor of a new set of headers and catback. That brace that runs across, when I unbolt it, will it play havoc with the suspension? Alignment and such?
I just realized that this looks real bad, all this just for a starter!
I think GM has a secret plot with the government on population control, because working on this thing will give ya a heart attack!!!!!(Or at least a migraine!)
Can't complain too much though, I got the car for free. 9C1 package, even has the lights!!!!!!!

Removing the angled brace won't affect the suspension or alignment. Just replace it when you finish. The exhaust shouldn't be a problem, IIRC. Once the brace is removed, you should be able to maneuver the starter of of place.

Look on some of the Impala SS and Caprice 9C1 sites, and you'll see how much fun everyone has with these. It will make you want to install a very good quality replacement unit, for sure.

I went ahead and purchased a high torque mini to replace the stocker. The swap went well, the angle brace MUST go if any luck was to be had. The toughest part was getting the rusty bolts out of that brace. The cover for the T.C was not a real issue, but it would make re-installing a bit easier if it was removed!
Vader, reccomend a certain site for those Impy, 9C1 fellows?

Not to be the bearer of bad news here...but I actually READ the sticky at the top...I personally don't care, but I don't want to see you get banned either...
