intake question pertaining to 87' and up heads.
i bought an edlebrock small block torker intake off ebay a few months ago when i was planning to drop a small block in my 83' z28. since then i bought a 454 so this intake is currently collecting dust.
i was thinking about letting my dad put it on his 92 RS. but the 4 inner intake bolts are different than stock.
heres my idea, tell me if this sounds good or not...
i fill the bolt holes on the intake with epoxy and then drill new holes through the epoxy to match the bolt holes on the heads.
i know epoxy is strong stuff but would the this hold up?
the other idea is to have the holes welded up then drill holes through the welds. but i dont know what kinda weld bonds to aluminum best.
a guy that works at a salvage yard here in town says that he just cuts the intake with a jigsaw and puts a couple of washers between the intake and the head of the bolt. he said hes built dozens of engines like this with no problems but that sounds like riggin' it to me.
oh well, i figured this would be a cool b-day gift for my dad.

I was told once that you could simply elongate the afore-mentioned holes slightly by inserting a 3/8" drill bit in the hole and working it back and forth. I never had to try it so I do know for sure but it sounds reasonable if the angle is not that far off..........

Car: 87 Monte Carlo SS
Engine: 89 IROC 350 TPI
Transmission: 700R4 rebuilt w/TCI kit
Axle/Gears: 9" from 57 ranchero unsure gears.
you can elongate the holes, BUT!!! you can only do it on a newer (center bolt pointing up) intake manifold to put on older heads, I tried it the other way around, ran out of material to hang on to so it looked like a slot for the bolt by time I got done, it may have worked but I didnt want to chance it.
good luck

nic,
i have an 87 engine with original heads and an older manifold... they just drilled the manifold straight down and installed washers to compensate for the incorrect angle... it holds well in my engine, no oil, water or air leaks so far.
i'll be replacing it though when i get the chance just to make ultra sure...

that sounds kinda like what the guy at the salvage yard was telling. your idea sounds better though because your drilling instead of cutting the intake with a handsaw. thanks, thats probably what ill do.

I have an '87 engine with an older edelbrock performer. I had a machinest friend make 4 15 degree wedges (1/4" minimum thickness)to compensate for the angle of the center bolts. I then slotted the holes on the intake so teh bolts would fit. Its been working without any problems for 35000 miles. I saw someone do the same thing using rocker arm ***** for washers, but i liked my method better, it looks OK too.

Engine: Minirammed 385, 396 RWHP
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 3.73 Moser 12-bolt
I've done it too: I just slotted it with a die grinder, then massaged it with a cylindrical rasp. No epoxy, wedges, or anything, and no vacuum leaks. I used Permatex ultra-copper spray-a-gasket on the Felpro gaskets, and it worked like a charm.
I have '88 centerbolt heads on a 1984 2-pc. block, with a non-egr Edelbrock performer intake.
