@!#%$!#@$%@# rusted cam

I've been out of town and I just came back and went to my shop to check up on things...apparently the roof sprange a leak and dumped water over all my @#$%@%$ cams...there is surface rust on all the surfaces. If I scotchbrite this off will they be alright or are they junk?

I suppose it depends on how long it was. If they're rusted enough to cause pitting, I would be hesitant to use the cam, but if it will all come off with scotch brite, it will probably be ok.

yeah i agree if they clean up with scotch brite i wouldn't worry about it. you wouldn't want to use anything that left marks that would cause wear.

IROC,

Are the cams rollers or flat tappets? The surface rust on a flat cam might not be a big issue, since the first twenty or so minute of operation should polish the lobes rather nicely. A roller cam might not be as forgiving, but remove all the rust first and have a closer inspection.

Just a hint: Storing spare parts in original cartons and/or in plastic bags can prevent a lot of this kind of mishap.

I would guess it wouldn't cause many problems on a roller cam either, because the roller is going to, um, roll over it anyway.

It's a roller cam alright...although I have a couple of pontiac solids as well. I keep all my stuff in the original boxes, but the bag was not on the cam when I got it. I think I'm going to take all of them to a machine shop and have them polish them. thanks
