Cam Help

I need some cam recommendations. I was supposed to buy a Hot Cam but it was accidentaly stored in a water puddle in a friends garage. I got offered another cam from someone else but it seems like it would be too much. It is a Comp I think, but the specs are 234*in 244* @.050 and 560 lift with 1.6 rockers 112* lobe sep. Does this seem to big or Should it run ok? My heads are mildly ported and the rest of the mods are in the sig. A rough idle doesn't bother me, I just don't want to over cam and slow down. This is going in a L98 shortblock.

Stock springs will bind well before 0.560" of valve lift. However, as a safety feature, the factory pressed-in rocker studs will start to pull out and prevent valve spring coil bind and possible valve/pisont interference.

In other words, you're going to have to spend a lot more time reworking your valve train before you can use such a cam.

Judging from you sig, I dont know about your transmission. If its a manual, thats fine. If its an automatic, i can imagine something like a 2500-3000 stall speed would be on tap to tame that cam. And as vader said, youre valvetrain needs to be up to par to handle that cam.

The heads have ARP screw in studs and comp 987 springs with guide plates. The problem is I only spin to about 6000rpm and wonder if I will actually slow down due to the less than ideal heads and relativly low shift point.

Are you sure the duration is 234/244. I think it may be 230/244 which means its the COMP cc306. You will have to spin that cam higher than 6K I guarentee that. There are stock headed LT1 guys running that cam w/ little to no problems. Personally I wouldn't go that big w/ mild ported heads, it screams for a set of AFR or hogged out Vette heads. But you can do it if the price is right!!!

Well the price is $75.00. I'm just not sure about spinning over 6000 with a stock bottom end, nor do I want a cam that will be a complete mis-match.

I bet your mild ported heads flow about what stock LT1 heads flow, so if those guys are running that cam on stock heads, you should be fine.

I see you are from KY, if you ever get on the KYFU board, then ask Chad W. he spins his motor to. He has the 306 in his LT1...
