Runnin' on 3/4 quart of oil?
My friend came over the other day so we could use my ramps to change the oil in his 300ZX, and when we pulled the drain plug only 3/4 of a quart came out, black as the ace of spades.
The oil he had in it was Mobil 1. My question is, knowing that the car has a 3 5/8 quart oil capacity, would the engine have seized up running with only 3/4 quart if it hadn't been synthetic? I was just curious.

Mods: Too busy trying to make it run right to mod it.
Airfoil, Dynomax cat-back, Accel coil, 180 t-stat, Bald Eagle tires,
Hypertech fan switch, Ruger P95DC, hot wife, new oil filter,
thick rubber floormats, towels in the seats.

If your friend drove around town real slow, and didn't rev the motor, then enough oil might have fallen back to the pan fast enough to keep up pressure. If he revved it though, his 3/4 quart of oil might end up all up top, with the oil pump trying to pump air.
Same goes with hard acceleration, turning, or braking. If the oil sloshed away from the pickup, then the oil pressue light should have turned on.

My car never burned a drop of oil and every time I checked it it was doing fine then one day while changing the oil I only drained about 1 quart mind you the car ran just as it always had but a few months later it started smoking due to blow-by mostly and some being valve seals but to make the story short....wouldn't have siezed but his engine is probably shot and it won't be long till it shows, only thing going for him is the mobil 1 hopefully he is lucky.

That's what I figured. He's got some serious tapping noises going on in it already and he flogs the hell out of it all the time. It's not that old (80,000 miles) but I wouldn't be suprised to see it bite the dust sometime in the near future. We put Mobil 1 back in, so perhaps the car can drink from the water of life if he keeps tabs on the oil level regularly. In reality, he'd be better off with an IROC, but since the car was given to him I guess I can make an exception. Thanks for the input guys and I'll be sure to beat the **** out of him the next time he thinks the dipstick is wrong!
