I just came back from the dyno yesterday and I made 407.7 hp and 480.1 tq at the rear wheels with stock Vortec heads that have not even been ported and with less than .500 lift and a 50 shot under the carb. It still has way more in it. My timing is falling off at high RPM. It seems to go full 36 advance, then loose a couple of degrees. Plus, my A/F ratio is at 10.4:1.

yup i ran 11.96 @ 113.51 with my vortecs. that run.. as well as the last few runs with a crackec in half 700R that was struggling and purging fluid out the top of the case.
i've got a bunch of new goodies for it, new carb to replace the 40 year old hand me down. the 3.73 10 bolt which wasn't enough... i got a 12 bolt moser with 4.30's. and a th400 with a 4000stall converter, and a transbrake. to replace the 700R and the 3300stall converter.
with these goodies i'm hoping to get into the mid elevens at about 116

Now is there somthing else I can do to my motor to help it reach the lower 12's? my main goal is to go 11.9 all motor with this car and keep it a weekend cruiser.. thanks

This what you get when you search. A thread from 2004.
Let's see what's happening now with stock Vortecs.
Maybe post ET, MPH, 60', weight and DA if you know it.
12.7, 105, 1.7, 3700, Sea level.
I'll qualify that with displacement too. 350.

Theres 89fbirdformula who claims to make 363whp on a set of mild cleaned up vortec heads in a vortec stealth ram based combo...lean air fuel and pulling timing on the dyno, it has more in it.
old combo went 12.20's with ported TPI on stock vortec heads, so it should be an 11 second car with the new setup.

Re: best hp/et with vortec heads?
My car ran 12.5 with stock vortec heads and under .500 lift cam. And that was with the 2.73 gears in the rear and a baby 2200 stall. It dynoed at 320rwhp. It would have been damn close to 11's with the right gear and stall.

Any idea as to the weight?

Re: best hp/et with vortec heads?
I'm hoping the the new chassis will be a couple of hundered pounds lighter than last years. 86 IROC-Z (old) vs 86 Coupe. That should be worth a couple of tenths.
Puts me in line with your 12.5. However I have a 3.73 gear and a 3000+ stall.
With the weak gearing and poor stall you must have been pulling hard at the top end.

I would think there are a few more combinations out there.
I'd like to find something to shoot for this coming season.
Maybe there's an 11 second Vortec 350 NA with no juice lurking in the shadows...

I realize these are "magazine engine builds" however that kind of horsepower could get a 3300lb car down the track in the low 12's. Maybe 11.99 on a good day.
My old tank, at 3700 lbs dynoed 290/290 rwhp/rwt and runs 12.7x at 105 all day. Lighten it up by 400 lbs and 12.3's are possible. Find another 50 horsepower and 11's are close.

Re: best hp/et with vortec heads?
It's not a street car, but my FIL's '83 Firebird has run 11.6s with a 12.5:1 383 with lightly ported vortecs, th350 w/ 3000 (or more, can't remember exactly) stall converter, and 4.10s (9"). It's 3200 pounds with him in it. I weigh about 50 lbs more than him and have no trouble running 11.90s in it in the summer heat. 60' is usually 1.6-1.65 range. Even gets a little daylight under the left front every time
EDIT: Holy crap didn't realize this was my first post on this forum...coulda swore I've posted here before...just a lot of trolling I guess lol...anyway hello all

Yup race gas, 110 IIRC...Cam isn't that big, I wanna say around .530 lift, not sure on the duration. Sorry I'm vague on the details, he built it when I lived in CA and I've just driven it a few times since I moved closer...
