weird noise
ok, so i had a fresh 327 put in my 84, tow'd my camaro and burned up the 700r4, so when i put the new motor in, i could only use 2 gears, a few times i was forced to drive it to work, and basically, i would be redlined in the slow lane, doing about 40.. eventually, the trans stopped working period, and also developed a small, CLUNKING noise coming from near the distributor, i assumed it was coming from the trans since the motor is a fresh rebuild, but i just had my 700r4 rebuilt, and the CLUNKING is still there....
car runs fine, the CLUNKING goes away when you give it gas, its only present at idle.. it sounds like its coming from directly behined the aircleaner....
ideas?

Re: weird noise
ohhhh i went undernieth and sure enough the noise is coming from underneith...right where the torque converter and the flex plate.... it doesnt feel cracked or loose....how do you go about tracking the noise down? will a junkyard plate fix the problem?

Start by unbolting the converter from the flexplate. You'd be amazed how much difference that alone can make in the diagnosis.
Check for loose flexplate to crankshaft bolts next. I've had recent experience in that arena.

Re: weird noise
i just had my trans rebuilt, a loose flexplate is something the mechanic could have not noticed ? because all it has to be is not torqued enough? i looked at the plate while the car was on the lift, and didnt notice any damage to the flexplate... im assuming the first step is to remove the converter and torque the flexbolts with a torque wrench...do you know how many LBS the flexbolts need to be?

Re: weird noise
go to autozone and get the manual for your car. no person should work on their car without it. helps alot!
