Should I be concerned??

Yesterday I started up the car, and it fired up pretty good (no problems thus far). After I get it up and goin, I reverse it and it dies when I'm in the street. I figure it's still cold or something (this car seems to be really cold blooded or something?) I start it and start to drive for awhile.

After driving it a few blocks, my battery meter starts to read unusually low below the half way point on the gauage. I get to a light, and I notice the car wants to turn off on me (lights start dimming along with instrument cluster/gauages.)

My question is, could it be the battery is dying/weak, or could it have to do with the altinator?

Also, I have an electric fan hooked up to the car, and when it gets to a certain temp, I turn the fans on to keep it cooled and stable (180 deg.) However, I'm not sure if this could be the culprit (or my own stupidity bleh), but when I was driving, the switch was already in the on position, and from my guess, I forgot to turn it off from a few days ago. Could this be enough to do the above mentioned and rob the battery?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The battery starts the car. The alternator keeps it running.

yes i bet those fans assassinated your batter in the middle of the night, go to your nearest wal mart or where ever you get your car work done and ask them to check your battery if your battery is still good and the problem still persists then you now its the alternator, and just remember to kill the fans when you leave. good luck

Re: Should I be concerned??

i had a similar problem where i had a bad battery that would allow the car to start, but once warmed up the car would wanna die, it would stay on with my foot on the pedal but once let off it would die and not wanna turn on. the problem was a bad battery, and a bad IACV.

anyways back to your problem

you probably left the fan on all night and drained the battery a good bit. but its no reason for the car to turn off on you. if you keep your foot on the pedal does it still turn off?

Re: Should I be concerned??

Ahh, just what I was thinking. I started the car today, and the meter went up to 13, so that's a good thing. I switch the fans on and it goes just a little bit down then goes back to 13 (or 12.5).

However, since it was mentioned, the car does tend to shut off after awhile, so I'm pondering if it's the altinator? If I play with the pedal a lil bit, the car seems just fine, but if I leave it alone for awhile, it'll just shut off and I gotta restart the thing (as if it's still cold, even though it's not.)

I did that today after washing the polishing the car. I got in and started it up to check the battery. It went up to the normal, so that's good. after letting it warm up for awhile, I would put it in gear (reverse, neutral etc..) When I put it in drive/overdrive, and hold the brake down to prevent it from going into the shed, the car would die. It only seems to happen most when I do this (it died 4/5 times just testing it out like this). Any ideas?

Re: Should I be concerned??

that sounds like my previous problem, it would die when id try to put it in drive or neutral, sounds like the Idle air control valve to me.

edit: does it have a rough idle?

The idle seems pretty fine to me. It idles at around 700/800 ish, but it seems pretty level to me.

Re: Should I be concerned??

I haven't posted in awhile. I've been reading around on here and I noticed quite a bit of people have been experiencing the same problem as me (same symptoms and all).

How do I go about adjusting the IACV and what do I set it to (if it's that kind of thing)?

Also, what would be considered a normal "oil pressure" reading for this kind of car? I have a feeling it may be running a lil high, that's why I'm wondering.
