clicking noise

ok guys there is a pretty loud clicking sound coming from my front passenger side only when i brake, the caliper was sticking so i changed the calipers and put some stainless lines on thinking it might fix it but its still there

if im going fast and brake i can here it out of my passenger window "fast clicking sound" then as i slow down the clicking also slows down, but only when the brakes are applied i can hear it, what could this be?

Re: clicking noise

Are you sure the clicking is from the front? I had the end of my emergency cable cable in the drum to break off and click when I was going down the road. I had someone stand outside the car and they could hear it and told me it was the back. Sure enough I pulled the wheel and that's when I found it.

You could have a bad wheel bearing and that will cause a clicking when they get dry. If it is I would change both the inner and outer bearings as well as the seal. The reason it could be clicking in the front when the brakes are applied is because the wheel will move with bad bearings.

Re: clicking noise

nevermind i just went with whatever the parts store had, one question, i bought the inner and outer bearing and a seal came with it, when i took apart the old stuff there was no seal on it?? should i put it on anyway and should i put any grease inside between the 2 bearings?

Re: clicking noise

Keep in mind you need to replace the races along with the bearings. First yes there should be a seal if there was none that was wrong. Second yes you should build up a "grease dam" with grease in the middle of the 2 bearings. This prevents the grease from oozing out and away from the bearings when it gets hot. Be sure you have the correct bearing grease as well.

Re: clicking noise

is the races the sleeve around the bearing? if so the bearings came with these and i did punch out the old and put in the new ones

Re: clicking noise

Yea the races are the sleeves that the bearings make contact with if your replaced these thats good because it is a must some good brands like timkin even have matched sets but most as long as the bearings and races are new thats fine. As far as the grease is concerned its more than just a temp rating although that is part of it as disk brake set up require higher temp ratings than drum brakes. You need to use GM part number 1051344 bearing grease or its equivalent (usually will say on the package if it equivalent to this spec).

Re: clicking noise

i used mobil 1 synthetic grease, it says for wheel bearings and the guy said it was the best he had... how important is the dam of grease?

Re: clicking noise

Well it may be for wheel bearing but the composition of the grease may be different and not compatible for this application. For example wheel bearing grease for a honda if im not mistaken has a ridiculously high moly content and useing our wheel bearing grease in a honda would cause issues even though they are both wheel bearing greases. Its kinda like transmission fluid there are many different types and although they are all transmission fluid they are not all the same and cannot be used in place of each other. How important is the grease dam? I would say it pretty important. As the grease gets hot it will tend to flow out and away from the bearing unless contained. Would it cause your bearing to seize up and explode because you didnt do it? Who knows if you drove it like a race car with some heavy breaking yes you would be screwed most likely in pretty short order. If you drove it nicely you would be ok in the short run but over time I think you would still be in trouble.

thanks, well i guess ill find out...

one question, i changed my calipers in the front because one side was sticking, now with the new calipers its still doing it, besides dirty calipers what could be the cause? bad fluid?

Well first off how do you know it was sticking in the first place?

Re: clicking noise

only when i come to complete stop and let off the break you can feel and hear it... and it only does it after driving a while when hot i guess...

Re: clicking noise

well I guess my question would be what exactly did you hear and feel? Also im assuming your talking about a front disk brake or are you not sure which brake it is?

Re: clicking noise

But what is it you actually feel? I mean is it pulling to the right or something? Also the way our calipers work they slide on the bolts that hold them in place you may want to replace thoes too if they are badly rusted or damaged.

Re: clicking noise

you can hear a loud click noise when it releases and i know its brakes because when i let off the pedal the car dont move you can just feel the pasenger side being held back hard to explain...

the whole caliper is brand new and it came with new bolts also, im doing a rearend swap this weekend, it might be the rear but it feels and sounds like the front
