mass air flow question

I have a 1991 Formula 350 and recently it started running real crappy. My question is when I unplug the mass air flow sensor the car runs great. I plug it back in and it runs like crap again. Does this mean I need a new sensor? I have no service engine light and tried replacing the mass air flow relay and it still wants to stall and runs rough.

Re: mass air flow question

Most likely it is the MAF, because when unplugged the car runs off the computer memory, and if you plug it, then its starts reading the values off the sensor. I read how to diagnose the problem here in the forum also, (just google how to check MAF sensor on third gen). hopefully that helps. Before you replace it don't forget to check you connectors.

Re: mass air flow question

I had the same problem with my 88 firebird I got some mass air flow cleaner at autozone and sprayed it and it made my car run better. Try the cleaner before u by a new one

Re: mass air flow question

I tried the cleaner and it didn't help. Good news is I got a mass air flow sensor from Advance Auto and it cured the problem.

Re: mass air flow question

Well,it ran okay for a little bit then started acting up again but this time the service engine light came on. Pulled the code and says I have a faulty electronic spark control module.......guess its back to the parts store.

Re: mass air flow question

That sucks. I would have the parts store test the electronic spark control module before u get a new one if they can test them. I would also have the tps checked out bc that can cause the car to run poorly. I've had to change mine 3 or 4 times already. I hope u can get ur car running right.
