key stuck - could it be VATS? 89 GTA
Hi,
Today I found my self unable to turn the ignition from run to off. Key is stuck. I know I have VATS but I wasn't sure if VATS could be doing this or is it just a bad tumbler/lock.
I thought a VATS problem would not prevent the key from turning but would disable the engine (eg. no fuel/spark)
True? If so is a VATS ignition much more $ than a regular one? If so what part would I ask for to get a non vats ignition?
Thanks for any help
-Dan

before you tear into the column, make sure the shifter bowl on the column down near dash moves fully to the park position.
if you do need a new lock cylinder, stay away from the aftermarket VATS lock cylinders. they are only a little cheaper than a Delco lock cylinder and they don't last very long.
you can use a plain non-VATS lock cylinder, but you must do the VATS bypass talked about in the technical section here,

I thought so - I will check the park interlock or whatever it is - (I think that's what you were suggesting)
I am running a custom prom I did years ago and I am pretty sure I have VATS disabled.
It seems like going with a standard lock set is simpler since I believe if I get a new VATS lock, I'd need to get a VATS key made that matches the resistance of my current key (not sure how that works but it doesn't sound cheap)
So can I just get an autozone $12 non VATS for my year firebird and expect it to work?
thanks everyone,
-Dan

if you have already disabled the VATS system including the starter lockout, then there is no need to get a VATS lock cylinder.
i've installed a fair number of the non VATS after market lock cylinders and though sometimes you may need to wiggle the key a little, they seem to work fine.
