convert 305 tpi to HO?

Is this possible? i had a 305 HO in an 87 monte SS and i loved it. lots of torque and high end power. I wonder if its possible to convert the 305 tpi (fresh reman) in my camaro to the same specs as the monte engine.

Re: convert 305 tpi to HO?

Maybe I am wrong but a stock TPI shoudl make 25-35 more hp than a carb HO montecarlo. Sounds like your TPI is not working right.

Re: convert 305 tpi to HO?

it probably isn't. i haven't had much of a chance to drive it though. i have been going through the painful process of un-doing alot of stupidity the PO left me to figure out. my last camaro was an 86 z28 that the PO had ripped off the tpi and carbed it. i guess ill finish fixing it and see how it goes.

It already is, apart from the induction system.

probably similar I think the monte SS made about 170hp and the TPI should be about 215 when working right. Getting the car to 305HO specs would be a downgrade.

Re: convert 305 tpi to HO?

guess it's a good thing i asked then. LOL. i guess this poor tpi has been abused and misused. the montecarlo used to break em loose with no effort.

Re: convert 305 tpi to HO?

Just realized you have a TPI auto

87 Z28 A4 LB9 V8 9.3:1 5.0 (305) 190@4000 295@3200 TPI 2.73

Looks like you only get 190 not 215hp Also looks like you probably have 2.73 gears ouch. I think the 87SS got 3.73 gears and that would make a world of difference.

Changes from year to year could be 2.73 to 3.42.

https://www.thirdgen.org/tech-data

Here is a list of every year and rear option.

I think all bird L69s were 3.73

My friend has 2.73 on his mild 350 TA auto and second is a dog until her gets the RPMs up. 2.73 really slow the car.

You got it. For an auto I would suggest staying around 3.40, 3.73 will make 1st way to steep IMHO.

It looks like the 87 305 M/T came with the same heads the 350 A/T had that same year. so if i can find those heasd it should really up the HP right?

I don't know if that is correct. I thought all 305 heads were 58cc chambers and 350 were different but I could be VERY wrong.

Pull a valve cover and see what heads you have now. For a 305 you may just want to put in 1.94, 1.60 valves and give them a nice P&P.

The only aftermarket heads I can think of are trickflow and world products.

Personally I would punch them out for 1.94, 1.5 valves and port and polish them.
