Re: tpi 350 oil coolong setup

Very difficult to get a pic of an installed setup, but it basically consists of 2 pieces. The "sandwich between the oil filter & the block & the tubes running from it to the coolant hoses.

I know https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/member.php?u=40809 has a brand new reproduction tube piece & a used sandwich adapter for sale, if your looking for a setup.

(sandwich piece is in the cardboard box)

Re: tpi 350 oil coolong setup

Yep. Oil goes from the block through the sandwich, into the filter. Out of the filter, back through the sandwich & into the block.

Coolent runs from the radiator, through those lines to the sandwich, loops through & goes back to the radiator.

My balancer came apart a few years ago. The outer ring slid back & ate through the tube causing a coolant leak. I pull the tubes are, capped off the coolant lines near the radiator but left the sandwich in place. Been that way a couple years now. Doesn't hurt anything by not having it working. Makes it the same as 99% of all other SBCs made without oil coolers.

If you want an oil cooler, ditch the chocolate milkshake maker for something like this:

Re: tpi 350 oil coolong setup

GM used different style coolers in different applications. The 3rd gen F-bodies ran coolant through a "sandwich" cooler where the oil itself ran straight through it. I.e. they brought the coolant to the oil.

On trucks (like my 1990 454 SS) the "sandwich" looked similar but it actually sent the OIL to an external cooler built into the driver's side radiator end tank. Those systems were better at cooling the oil, quite frankly, but they were HELLACIOUS for oil leaks. The connectors were finnicky and the seals prone to failure. Most "real world" beater trucks that used this system you'll find it has been defeated and removed for that reason.

The 3rd gen F-body sytem is much less leak-prone and reliable. It just doesn't do as good a job cooling the oil. Many of those systems are still in service and the owner rarely even knows their car even has an oil cooler.

In either case, if yours is FUBAR, you can just ditch it. Unless you are going road racing or towing heavy loads the lack of a factory cooler system will rarely cause a problem. Even if it is a problem, running some good synthetic oil in the motor will cost less and keep enverything happy for pennies compared to trying to replicate either factory oil cooler system (and there are no parts to fail or leak).

Re: tpi 350 oil coolong setup

i built my oil cooler setup using parts from an '83 impala cop car-the cop car sandwich adaptor is same as used on trucks of that era and probably the same as used on '90s era trucks as well, very easy to plumb to an oil radiator using -10 line and the correct AN fittings. There are several areas
on the stock adaptor that are kinda restrictive to cooler circuit flow in stock,as cast form-some die grinder work fixes that-the worst are is where the steel oil filter fitting threads into the adaptor(partly blocks the port that sends oil to the radiator) Mounted the oil radiator(made by B/W,off the cop car)underhood,LH side, relocating the charcoal canister back a bit.Airflow provided when oil cooling needed by 8"thermostatic fan-buick GN intercooler fan trimmed down and new hub built to turn with chevy citation fan motor Setup in operation since '95 and very effective and reliable.Filter still well protected -does not jut down into harms way.

Re: tpi 350 oil coolong setup

Wait.... you want to add a factory-style oil cooler to your V6 Camaro (says V6 in your car specs)? Totally different filter size, totally different adapters. No way to put a V8 setup on a V6. Don't know if there ever was a V6 factory oil cooler option.
