If I had CAM wiping, can I just do a cam swap?

I still need to do more troubleshooting, but I might be leanintg towards cam wiping on a 1985 LG4, with 123k miles.

Just curious, think once could get away with a cam swap, and maybe new lifters. I eventually want to do a motor swap, just not in the financial situation to do it. I am sure there is a good chance alot of metal got loose and floated through the engine. Worth just chaning cam/lifters, and a few oil changes and riding it out?

Or is it likely a disaster. Just want it to go a bit longer before I start doing a motor swap. Its not my DD, but I like having it as a backup DD, and I'd rather car not sit while I wait to fix it right.

It'll need to come apart and get cleaned out.

If you wiped a lobe and metal went through it, the motor has to come apart. It'll scratch the bearings badly and they'll be no good.

I dunno, I might just end up selling the car....

Wife was unemployed for Fe months, she got a job, but she is due with the 2nd child in about 2 months.

I was hoping to put in a new engine, new coolant system, electric fans, really clean up the engine bay. Just wasn't ideal right away. I am not ready to do the project I want, and I don't want to dump tons of hours, and money on an engine I don't care about.

RI also hate to have an car sit for months not moving.

Re: If I had CAM wiping, can I just do a cam swap?

myself,i'd try a new cam and lifters in it-the particles released by the cam failure didn't do the engine any good, but these are tough engines don't forget. About 17 yrs ago i had a lifter that was ticking and put new lifters on-about a week later noticed particles glittering in the oil on the dipstick...replaced both cam and lifters this time and has been fine to this day-lesson learned,DO NOT run new lifters on a used cam...

I was thinking that as well.

I mean I would need to do a full dissasembly, replace most all the bearings, maybe even "clean up" the cylinder walls, a basic rebuild.

The engine was fine before idled a little rough, I thought it was a carb issue, and more and more was starting to make me think cam wiping.

I was considering picking up a decent new cam/lifters(seems like I see packages for under $200. Do a cam swap. And get a year of light usage out of the car.

Its a second car, but I am not in the best place to be dumping the $3-4k into the car at the moment. I also hate to let cars sit, I just know things go to hell with them when you do that.

I was thinking of doing a quick oil change or two, maybe buy one of those magnet things for oil filters, make sure I have a magnetic plug, and get one I can out.

Its an LG4, it was a bit of a dog to begin with and with a new cam might even be a bit quicker.

example, something like this. I haven't researched the cam profile, but just a quick search

Re: If I had CAM wiping, can I just do a cam swap?

I've rolled the dice twice now on flat lobes by just swapping the cam/lifters, and gotten away with it. The filters seemed to get most of it. We are talking a single lobe, with about 0.1" off the nose both times - this and my lack of space to pull the engine lead me to risk it. I did several close spaced oil/filter changes afterwards.

Sure it's the cam? Have you verified?

Its not fully verified, don't worry not buying parts until I figure it. But more and more I look, I am leaning towards it.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/carb...etonation.html

Looking back, it had some hard starting, really dead on top end of acceleration(assumed because it was an LG4), then recently it started ticking, also now starting to get some blue smoke out the back.

I am just trying to prep up if it ends up being that once I start tearing pulling stuff apart. I will probably start do a compression check as well.

The car never had any issues with any smoke coming out the back. Previous owner "claimed" new rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and did the valve guides. Didn't matter if he did or didn't, price was good for the car. I don't believe he hadn't done what he said, the oil pan gasket does look new.
