A plain old timing light with rotary timing dial works. and not too expensive.

I had a nice digital model with RPM read out, it worked too but I ran over it at the track years ago

I did not want to spend the money for another digital one.

A helper or an external tach.

I have a few external tachs for my chainsaws and small engines, I thought about that after I posted.

How is that actron light posted above, can't find many reviews about it.

I like mine. Seems plenty bright, the pickup is made out of metal and it has lasted about 2 years. I have used better but they were all at least $100, for the price I have not found anything better.

Have you tried it against any other light to see if the readings were the same with the 6al?

Yeah I had researched them before, if you do a google search a lot of them come up as not working with MSD boxes, I ordered a Old sears light off the internet, which I researched and they are sup to be the most accurate light out there for msd.

I ordered a set of timing tapes from MSD for $5. I plan on testing my adjustable light vs my static light.

I've had mine for years (Craftsman from Sears) and no issues to report with the 6AL. I like the dial back feature.

I got one that doesn't have a dial, My Balancer is degreed, they say the Model Light I Got is very accurate and is the one MSD recommends if you don't have there.

I like the recommendation from MSD. I've heard a story or two that the dial back light (as I have) isn't suited to a MSD system. I've experienced no trouble when comparing it to other timing lights I have but it's something I've wanted to investigate.
Sounds like you're good to go.

Both Sears/Craftsman old time Lights seem to work and both read the same.
