Okay, So I just got my 84 L69 running and whenever I go to put it in gear it sputters and dies. I did manage to take it out on the road for a little bit and it wanted to die whenever I came to a stop. I have replaced the carb, head gaskets, intake gaskets, distributor, carb spacer, exhaust manifolds and gaskets, pretty much everything. The previous owner had the same problem. It will run at idle just fine. I do not know what it is idling at because when the car starts it sits at 7k and does not move. I have read a bunch of things about newer camaros having the same issue, but nothing about the older ones. Everything is torgued to spec, and it is timed perfectly. Tach does not work so I can not tell the idle speed.

It idles at 7000 rpm?? or 700 rpm? If it's idling at 700 rpm while in park you just have your idle set too low, which is why it's dying when put into gear. You want at idle of between 650-700 rpms when in gear and around 900 or so when idling (maybe a little higher).

I am not sure what it is idling at. Tach does not work, just sits at 7k, apparently common problem.

ok, do you have the ability and means to hook a working tach up (even if it's temporary)? it just sounds like your idle is too low.

I will adjust the idle up today and get back to you. I do not have an extra tach anymore, was stolen.

Adjusted the idle up and it stayed running but didn't have a chance to really test it. The driver side head gasket blew. So, I will get back to this posting either tomorrow or Wednesday.

Sorry for the late reply. Got the car running, idling fine at lights. I adjusted the idle up and it stayed running. Still do not know what the idle is at but it stayed running. It bogged and died on the freeway though, so one problem fixed and another to go. Thank you for the advice.
