It's a Procomp head. And yes, they're absolute garbage. If it's cheap, there's a reason behind it when it comes to heads.

Care to elaborate? The design? Or the valve materials, spring, etc?

Horrid casting design, thin seats, ports are usually way off, terrible hardware, guides can sometimes be messed up/off, castings can sometimes be uneven requiring milling, they're made in china.

By the time you fix any issues with those heads you'll have spent enough to purchase a good set of heads and you'll still have a heap of scrap. Definitely not worth it. Want a budget head? Get a set of refurbished Vortecs.

Re: Anybody have experience with these heads?

I'm wanting to build over 500 hp at the crank out of a 350 bored .40 while keeping the compression as low as possible. So definitely want to get a good flowing set of heads.

Re: Anybody have experience with these heads?

Any other stipulations to the build? What is the budget? Some kind of forced induction would be the easiest way to reach 500hp while keeping the c.r. Lower. Whether n/a or using a power adder I would look into afr or brodix heads much better quality then procomp and they will reliably support your power goals.

Re: Anybody have experience with these heads?

Want to keep it n/a. Will eventually have some nitrous so going to be building for strength also. I'd like to keep budget down. I'll be doing all the work myself except for a few things like cam bearings and such. Want it on pump 91. I think it's attainable.

500hp, low compression and NA on a 350. I don't think that is going to happen any time soon.

If you do get it to happen you will need to spend big $$$ there will not be one stock parts in the engine and expect to spend over $1000 on heads alone. A solid roller cam will also set you back some decent $$$.

Re: Anybody have experience with these heads?

Well rods and pistons are going to be changed obviously. When I say low compression I'm talking 11 or less. And I don't see why or how it wouldn't be attainable with the right combination of off the shelf performance parts.

Of course your goal is obtainable it's just the cost factor that throws everyone off. I'm sure you have heard the saying about cheap, fast, reliable. An 11:1 small block with a forged rotating assembly a high end set of aluminum or race ported heads and an aggressive cam with over say .550 lift will reach your goals but don't expect to build it for around 2-3k

Re: Anybody have experience with these heads?

Here is a combination that gets close......

355
10.7 comp.
AFR 195's
Comp 280XFI
1.6 rockers
TRW forged pistons two valve reliefs
Extremely welded and ported manifold that flows in excess of 340 CFM
Short intake runners
1 3/4" shorty headers
3" catback exhaust

495/500 flywheel HP/TQ

That's a budget build.....

That was not cheap to build.

Re: Anybody have experience with these heads?

Unless I'm missing something I don't see why it can't be built for that cheap?

Heads=$1000
Pistons=$140-240
Rods=$180-260
Cam and valvetrain=$6-800

Have everything else. And like I said I'd be doing the majority of the work myself.

Thanks for a real world reply. Question though. Why not use a higher flowing head?

Higher flowing? Most people using small blocks will only dream of hitting a true 300 usable CFMs... let alone 340.

you're asking a real tall order. Throw nitrous on a build like that and it's going to blow up in your face.

Heads=$1500 now
Pistons=$390
Rods=$460
Cam and valvetrain=$6-800
Timing set $120
Forged crank (for NOS) $800
Machine work $600

That's about $5-6K in my book. plus the manifold work (about $800)

If that's cheap for you "awesome"

Cheap /= Good and Good /= Cheap

To make 500 HP NA will require something north of 6,500 RPM, probably more like 7,200-7,500 and that is going to take some very heavy duty/quality and therefore $$$ parts to keep it in one piece. 500 HP will also need a plethora of drivetrain and suspension modifications along with improvements in the braking and other safety features of your car.
