What makes it such a pain? I've replaced the stock mounts on other cars, never a thirdgen though, but while it can be on the annoying side, I don't think its difficult.

Its a pain to get to the bolts!!!!!
Actually, its a real biatch!
I have Energy Suspension polyurathane mounts.....they are stiff! If i had a choice, i would go with GM mounts. My buddy put them in his S-10 when doing the V8 conversion, they are very forgiving to lumpy cams

It looks like you have to drop the lower a-arm to get to the nuts.
If the nuts were welded to the k-member then it would be easy.
I was doing mine today, but I will wait till I get the Poly ones first.
Oh, and my motor is out of the car which seems to make it just a little easier, but not much.

Yup. And that entails compressing and removing the springs, and/or seperating the lower ball-joint.
Then you have to get a long extension with a wobbler on, at the same time as you attack the bolt from the other side.
Then you have to drill out the clamshell to seperate them in order to remove the mounts.
It's a whole lotta fun, let me tell you. I also used ES poly mounts, and man those suckers are stiff. The motor used to rock when I start it up. Not any more.
But they definitely transfer vibrations into the car. If you go poly, make damn sure you're up for that.
