305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
it may be vague but in stock form how would a race between a thirdgen with a 305 and a v6 fourthgen go? who and by how many lengths?

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
It's hard to say. What kind of 305? TPI? TBI? Also, what v6 is in the 4th gen? I know I didn't help much, but there are a ton of factors. If it's a LG4 vs a 2002 V6 for example, the v6 is going to take it. If its a 305 TPI vs a 1994 v6, then I would go 305.

I think you have him off the line with the amount of torque you have, but top end I think he will get you.

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
Some 305s (mine for example) put out more HP (225 hp) than the 3.8 liter fourth gen motors (200 hp). I believe my car (@ 3434 lbs. I weighed it) wieghs less than a fourth gen 3.8 car as well, so it all depends on what years we're speaking of...

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
i agree that we need to know what specs are of each car.
If the 4th gen is 93-95.5 you will most likely win regardless of what kind of 305 you have. those 4th gens came with the 3.4L and they were crap stock. 95.5+ recieved the 3.8L. They are strong motors. I had 3 4th gen v6s and they all used to beat 305s carbed and TBI all the time. TPI gave me a run for my money but i still managed to get those in the long run too.
Basically if you are stock, at best you will have a tight race that 8 out of 10 times the win will go the that v6...unless it has the 3.4L

7.4 0-60 and a 15.7 second (@88.5 mph) Q-M
http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/.../features.html
Typical TPI 305 cars were a bit quicker than that:
HPP magazine tested an '89 model Firebird Formula w/ 225 hp. TPI 305 5 speed:
0-60 in 6.5 seconds and a 15.02 Q-M time (@92 mph).

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
If equipped right, a V6(3800) 5spd and excellent driving, could sneak into the high 14's. Most were mid 15's. A4 cars were mid to high 15's.
So it would be a good match up to a 305, even a TPI.

I've raced a few 3.4's and 3.8's in the past and the 3.8's definately gave me a run for my money but I still came out on top. I had a friend who had one back in 2000 (3.8) with a few mods and that thing would dip. I wouldn't mind having one as a DD.

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
I own a 1998 3.8 with an aftermarket airlid, SLP under the airbox ram air scoop, K+N filter, and B+B Triflow mandrel stainless steel exhaust, 5-speed, 3.23 rearend as my daily driver. I figure this puts me at about 225 HP and 250 ft/ibs at the flywheel. Pretty stout for a V6 of that year.
I also own a 1992 Z28 305 TPI G92 5-speed, 3.42 limited slip rearend, with a gutted airbox, K+N filters, Borla Catback and a Hypertech chip. The 305 TPI is likely in the range of 245 HP and 320 ft/lbs at the flywheel. Both cars are in excellent mechanical condition.
I give the edge to the 1992 305 TPI. Off the line the torque advantage is markedly felt and the 1992 just pulls stronger throughout the RPM range until 4500 rpm. On a side note I get up to 34 mpg on the highway in the 1998.

you're almost dead even in weight with an LS1 F-body, the 3.8 is about 100-150lbs lighter

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
i destroyed this ***** kid at my school with a protege5 (i know not even close to an accomplishment but funny as hell) the only thing not stock on this kids car was the (black)rims, paint, fart can, and monster energy drink sticker he goes around revving at everyone and i caught him coming outta a gas station one day so i ran him down and he tryed to take off so i gave it some gas and pulled on him let off (thinking it couldn't be all he had) and pulled on him again will he was still trying to go. Pulled up at the next light and i couldn't see through his uber tint so i motioned for him to roll his window down and his girls in the car so i go "wanna race?" he just goes "nah" stupid rIcE bag

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
Well I had the pleasure to run with a 3.4 v6 fourth gen the other night, I am in a 305 TBI with mild mods and it wasnt really close. Granted we were on wet roads so it was a matter of who had traction first but if he hooked up before I did I was passing him in third gear once I got rolling. My car is a stick his was automatic not sure if that played into it too much but 1st gear was literally useless for me...

Re: 305 thirdgen vs v6 fourth gen
i've got another thought for a race, stock 77 trans am vs a stock 2001 v6 camaro (3.8). My friends cars, the camaro has like 200hp as far as i know, and the trans am has somewhere around 200 i think and i know hes gonna have more torque than the camaro but being 32 years old the t/a has to have lost a little bit. It wasn't neglected or anything but its not show quality and ya gotta figure in a little wear ect. So who do you guys think would have it?
